Breastfeeding

Tell me your breastfeeding during pregnancy experience.

I'm 4 weeks pregnant and still nursing my 17 month old DS. We still nurse on demand all day and night. He loves the boob and seeks it out often. I've never had a problem with it, and always planned to let him self wean. Now that I'm pregnant I'm so worried about drying up before he's ready to be done.

Feel free to answer all, none, or add more to my random questions:
What was your experience nursing while pregnant? How often were you nursing? Did you nurse all the way through pregnancy or stop? Tandem nursing? Did your milk dry up, and if so about when?

Re: Tell me your breastfeeding during pregnancy experience.

  • I'm almost 25 weeks pregnant and am breastfeeding my 2.5yo (33 months). My dr said if she was still nursing after 7 weeks she will probably continue to unless I wean her. I have no intention to wean her. I had a bit of discomfort early on but now it's fine. She nurses in the morning and before bed. I plan to tandem nurse if she wants to.

  • I nursed until I was about 16 weeks because my nipples got really tender. LO was 19 months ish. I think I was drying up a bit by then though, he was always a super avid nurser but was OK with a gradual reduction in bf sessions.
    Good luck!

  •  I got pregnant with #3 when #2 was 9 months old and exclusively BF (so...BF is NOT birth control lol). I wasn't having regular periods so didnt know till ds was about 11 mo and started refusing to nurse. Turns out I was pregnant and my supply had dried up! I was willing to keep nursing but ds weaned himself.
  • DD was about 16 months when I found out I was pregnant. I was nursing on demand with her and wanted her to self wean. A few days before I found out I was pregnant, she would be in the middle of nursing and suddenly stop and start crying. This continued for several more weeks. Also at this time my nipples started hurting constantly. I decided I wanted to get her weaned before the baby was born, because I didn't want to tandem nurse. Then I found out we were expecting twins and I definately wanted to wean.

I tried cutting out sessions, but I wasn't really get anywhere. We finally had a long weekend where she stayed at grandma's and I planned on not nursing after, but that didn't last, but she did drop to 1 or 2 sessions a day. Then she started teething and refusing anything else so we went backwards. We tried two more weekends and the last one worked. That was 2 weeks before my twins were born. She still requests it occasionally.

  • DD is just over 2.5 and nurses a lot through out the day. I'm 11 weeks. My pregnancy so far has not affected my supply. I can still hand express milk even after she nurses. Yes I'm weird and check that every so often. Just my curiosity of whether she's still getting milk or just nursing for comfort. I had sore nipples weeks 5 and 6 but it went away quickly without us changing anything.

  • I was still nursing my then 16 month old on demand night and day when I got pregnant with #2. I wanted to let him self-wean, and continued to nurse as much as usual at first. It was extremely painful for me, I would grit my teeth at every latch on. I didn't see him letting up at all so I started reading up on tandem feeding. Around 18 months I noticed he would get more and more frustrated not getting much milk anymore, so I started offering a sippy of whole milk to help fill him up. Dry nursing was even more painful and after lots of emotional talks and crying I decided it was time. MH and I went on a 2 night trip for our anniversary and decided to leave him with grandparents and see how he'd do without me. When we came back I just told him a few times that we didn't do that anymore but I love him and we can rock and snuggle. He took the transition way better than I expected. Was over it so quickly I was halfway offended, haha. I expected a relapse when baby came but he doesn't even seem to remember (*tear*).

My LO was a bit older than yours when I got PG (he was 2 at the time, turned 3 while I was PG), so my experience will likely be a bit different than yours.

What was your experience nursing while pregnant?
It HURT!  Other than that it was fine.  My milk did end up drying up and DS self-weaned because of it, but I'll get to that in question 3&4.  All in all, it was really perfect.  I had always wanted my DS to self-wean and we were able to do this.  It was a really smooth transition, too, he just wasn't interested anymore once the milk dried up.

    How often were you nursing?
DS was nursing maybe twice a day (he was STTN by then and I worked during the day).  The evening nursing was the last one he dropped.

Did you nurse all the way through pregnancy or stop? Tandem nursing?
DS self-weaned in second trimester just after his third birthday.  By that point, I was ready to be done.  I had said I was open to tandem nursing at first, but as time went on I was actually happy that he self-weaned.  It was hurting more and more to nurse as my milk dried up and I was enjoying it less because of that.

Did your milk dry up, and if so about when?
My milk dried up in second trimester.

  • I got pregnant when ds1 was 18 months and nursing 4-6x a day, including overnight. My milk supply first started dropping at 8 weeks and was gone by 10 weeks. Ds1 kept dry nursing. Around 13 weeks I night weaned due to strong aversion and had my husband go to him in the motn. At 16 weeks I started getting tons of braxton hicks which were especially bad during and after nursing, so I stopped nursing him to sleep and limited nursing to 2-3 minutes a day. He kept it up and I'm now still tandem nursing. Baby is 9 months and older turns 3 next month. Since ds2 was born, ds1 has nursed 1-2 times a day. Those are the limits I have placed. Since i babe was born, my aversions to older child nursing have mostly been mild or absent.

  • DD was 19 or 20 months when I became pregnant with DD2.  At the time I was still nursing her 4 times a day.  I did not see any drop in my supply.  It was terribly painful for me, and we ended up weaning at 21 months.  I was also terribly sick and very tired....and I just was done.
