Let's talk bikes

Does your LO have a bike yet?  We told MIL to get DD a tricycle for Christmas, but now I'm wondering if we should do a balance bike...but I did read that they should be good at using a trike before moving to a balance bike, so maybe we start with the trike.  What does your LO have?

Re: Let's talk bikes

  • I don't think they have to be good at a trike to have a balance bike. They are two different skill sets- trike is about pedaling, not balancing. Balance bike is about balancing, not pedaling.
Personally, based on where the pedals are located and how long legs have to be to really reach and push them all the way around, we're getting him a balance bike for Christmas.

We got the Strider one. It was an amazon lightning deal.

Yes to all of this. Leo has a trike and has been pedaling for a couple months now. He has been walking around on his Strider balance bike for a year and is starting to pick up is feet a little. I credit the balance bike for the easy transition to a bike for James. We had zero back breaking trips down the road teaching James to ride.

  • We have a 'grow with me trike' and a strider balance bike. DD uses her feet on the ground to move both. Next summer she will only be able to use the bike because I will convert the trike back to "baby mode" for DD2.

  • We bought a bike with training wheels for N. He likes to sit on it but isn't strong enough to pedal. We are hoping by next summer he can. It was too good of a deal to pass up in Septembef for his bday.

  • Colby prefers the balance bike to the trike.

  • Grant got a tricycle for his birthday so its just now starting to learn to ride it; but with it starting to get colder (and darker earlier) here there isn't too much time for him to spend outside at night.

I have thought about the balance bike but I am not sure if we will do it for Christmas given the other things we want to get him...  It might be some that waits until he is 3.

  • Santa is bringing a Tricycle for DD. I had considered a bike but I figured start small and work her up to a bike.

  • We have a strider that we bought for Lila but neither she nor Cruz ever cared for it.  He loves his trike (with removable handle for us to help steer/push).  Not on topic, but we're giving the kids scooters this year for Christmas.  Cruz will get this kind-mini micro kick https://www.microkickboard.com/childrens-kids-kick-scooter/mini-micro-kick-scooter?gclid=CjwKEAiAhIejBRCKm_fTxIWyyXcSJABXY0XYMAooJ-fDFBj_n3wwu6FDah8vAviD6OkDJ5-0tPvx8RoCZdXw_wcB, and Lila the maxi micro

Those are the ones my boys have and love. I have a coupon code if you want it.
ETA: looks like the coupon went out with the recycling :(

  • I have to admit I don't even know what a balance bike is.

Sage has had a small trike since her bday last year and is just now tall enough to really cycle the pedals.

Nuts! (about the coupon code) but so glad they like them! I have to admit, I was eyeing the adult sized ones after reading the description of them being more like longboards with handles! I could re-live my college days!

  • DS never really liked his balance bike until he was too big for it. We got it when he was 2. Now we have that and a trike for DD. DS has a little bike with training wheels, but doesn't really ride that either. Now I'm thinking I need to get both kids out on wheels more often!

I bought Leo's on Black Friday last year for 25% off I think. The coupon was only for 20% so you might have better luck waiting.

The way we actually made the transition for James was we took the pedals off his real bike and sent him down the driveway a few times so he used it just like his balance bike. Once he was good with balancing the bigger bike, we put the pedals back on and away he went. We had a day of having to push him to get going and then he learned how to push off and pedal. He is a maniac on his bike now. He is trying to learn how to pop a wheelie but I don't think he is quite strong enough yet. It is funny to see him try though.
