April 2014 Moms

Does your kid know their name?

i just noticed my girls respond to their names now. I know they like my voice and have responded when I talk for a while now, but just recently they have started looking up when they hear their individual names. It's amazing how fast their little minds form synapses! I wonder how much of what else I say they are understanding?

Re: Does your kid know their name?

  • That's so fun. Use responds to her name, unless she is looking at something too interesting to bother :)

  • One of the early tests they do for Autism is around this age to see if babies respond to their name being called, so it's a good sign. (Would like to add if your kid is not doing this yet, it does not mean he or she is autistic)
  • Funny thing is we call her with so many different nicknames, but she turns only when we say her name, Isabella.

  • I know he knows his name, but he's so interested in everything else he rarely responds.

  • Yes! I just noticed her starting to look at me when I say her name a week or so ago. She almost always responds with a smile :)

  • Ya he has for a few weeks now. It's so cute.
  • We also call LO all sorts of nicknames but when we say his name he turns and responds!

  • I'm not sure if it's her name or our happy/excited voice that she reacts to. DD1 is always in her face going, "Kelsey, Kelsey, Kelsey!!" So maybe it is sinking in.

  • I think so- when I pick her up at daycare I say her name and she will turn her head; not sure if it's the name or my voice!
I'm trying to use her name more instead of all the nicknames
  • Sometimes i think so but not all the time. I think she is probably just responds to the tone of voice. She will also stare at me if i say "eat" or "all done" which are the two signs I've been trying to teach her the most. I think she recognizes them as being important but doesn't quite get what they mean yet.

  • Yes, making me wonder if I should stop calling him Gabba all the time now
  • Yes he loves his name! No matter what he is doing He he will flip his head around and reply with a big old grin! it's my favorite.. I find my self calling his name often it's just too cute not to. :)
  • Yes she knows her name and her nickname I try to make different voices and she turn her head 360• .
  • Uh oh, I don't think my guy knows his name or any words, really. Someone tell me that's completely normal and your first child didn't know his name til he was 10 and now he's the president of the United States.
  • ^^^ well she's not the president yet, and does know her name at age 3... But she didn't know it at 6 mos.

  • Yup, she knows her name, though if she's absorbed in playing she may not always look up.

  • I honestly don't think he does :(. That plus the lack of babbling is getting me all sorts of worried.

  • We've noticed LO responding to his name too! Although I just called his name now and he didn't respond. I'm blaming the dog for being distracting.
  • I don't think DS knows his name (7.5 months). He'll look if we talk to him, but not specifically to his name yet.

  • Yeah he looks when I call him he always looks over with a grin unless he's busy playing.
