Supplementing w/ pumped BM? Is there an advantage? Trying to get LO to gain+

My son will be 3 wks this Wed & as of this past Fri, he was still not at birth weight....he was 8.2 at birth & as of Friday was 7.12.  Gaining very slowly....I don't feel like his feedings are very long and if they are, I feel as if he is hanging out using me as a pacifier towards the mid-end....are there any advantages to supplementing w/ pumped BM?  I get my pump tomorrow so I have no clue what's best.  Even thought about throwing a formula bottle in, but really don't want to as I've done it this long w/o it (he is my last baby & the only one I have gone this far with).  My other kids were FF.

  • If I was thinking of supplementing, I would use pumped BM. Pumping would help increase supply, so that could be an added plus. I would also use a supplemental feeding system (like Medela's supplemental nursing system) so that baby was getting the pumped milk at the breast- extra breast stimulation usually is a good thing and could help keep the little dude focus on getting breastmilk at the breast.

Is your pediatrician concerned? Have you talked to an IBCLC?

  • In the similar boat with my 5 week old. However, my ped is constantly monitoring and we have had to add formula supplementation. Thinking he is on a growth spurt this weekend as I had to up his formula. What we are doing is nursing first until I become a pacifier then if he is still hungry we give him an ounce and if he is still hungry up to another ounce about 5 ml at a time. I pump most feedings and have been since the hospital but if he has eaten well I only get 5ish ml so not enough to use as the supplement. We tried a formula free weekend after he had a big weight gain, but then he dropped again and had to add some back in. It has all been harder on me than him as I have to accept that him growing and needing the calories for brain food is the most important. He happily switches from breast to bottle and doesn't care what comes out. He does need extra after every feeding but he is much less fussy and awake when he hasn't had enough momma's milk especially in the evening.
