TTC after 35

Mucinex

So when I saw my OB last week she suggested I take Mucinex (not mucinex D but just regular Mucinex) because she thought it might help me read my mucus more easily.  I have mucus every single day of my cycle.  That stuff is like $30 for a month's worth...which I thought was kinda pricey but it's worth it if it helps I guess.  Anyone else ever taken mucinex while TTC.  Did it help?  I haven't noticed much of a difference with it yet and don't fully understand what it is supposed to do.  I know it changes the water content of your mucus or something...?  I'm off to google for more info but just wondering what other's experience with it are.

It will thin all your body's mucus. If you have thick mucus instead of watery or egg white it can help, but your best bet is OPKs coupled with temping. Cervical mucus is important, but not as important as timing.

  • Is it guaifenasin?  That's a good point @hooligans4.  The store brand are usually the exact same thing, but way cheaper.  Good luck!  I haven't taken Mucinex while TTC, but I've heard it can work.

  • ***warning: pregnancy mentioned***

I used it for the first time the month I got pregnant.  Who knows if it helped but it certainly didn't hurt.  I actually didn't have any stretchy CM when I was TTC (though I did when I was younger and briefly off the pill) but I did have the watery kind which is supposed to be second best.  I don't think you need to take 30 days worth though...I believe I started it a few days after the end of my period and then through ovulation and maybe one day after for a total of about a week.  I didn't really notice anything different than normal but again I had the watery stuff already without the Mucinex.  Maybe it just helped produce more?  Not sure.  I definitely agree with whoever said that CM is important but timing is more important.  I had a few months where we were technically in the fertile window but the month we had perfect timing was the one that finally worked.  Good luck!

  • I tried it about 6 months ago for a week or so around O but BFN so I gave up on it. I'm a super natural girl anyway so my acupuncturist was like wtf! (Purposely being a bit awkward here lol but it's true)
    TTC#1 since Aug 2013, I'm 37, DH 41.

I'm very sensitive to diet (gluten, avoid processed foods) and environment. Have a history of inflammation and tendinitis before going off gluten in 2009.
July 2014 - RE Visit #1: Eggs look good, Endometrioma on R ovary, HSG showed blocked R tube close to ovary. DH SA normal
DX: Endometriosis probably the IF cause and gunking up tubes.  Since egg reserve is high, RE says I can wait a couple months and then get laproscopic surgery to remove endo & clear tube.  If that doesn't help then move to IVF.
Dec 2014 - Saw new RE - does not recommend surgery on tube as it isn't likely to help.  Doubts I have endometriosis.  My endometrioma shrunk to neglible size (yay!)
    Seriously considering IVF in March/April
    12/17/14 - Natural BFP!
  • Be sure you are drinking lots of water!  Easier remedy, but yes the guiaf.... is what will help with increased cm production/observation.  Best wishes
