How to tell boss you're not returning...

I think I still have at least a month before I tell my boss I'm expecting. I'm thinking I will tell him before we have holiday break in December. At what point should I tell him I'm not planning to return after the baby is born? I work in a school so I'll be due over the summer and won't return. Obviously it will be before the end of the year, but he is difficult to deal with and I'd rather wait a little while...

  • I have a difficult boss as well. I know he will not take it well because not only is his only other decent employee also preggo and leaving, but I will gone right as his busy season starts. I'm not telling him until I absolutely have to.

  • I was teaching when I got pregnant with my son (he was due in early May), and I told my boss I was expecting when I started my 2nd tri (Nov). I told her I wasn't coming back in mid February. My school issued contracts for the following year in early/mid March, so I told them in early February to save them the time of writing me a new contract.
I don't blame you for wanting to wait awhile. If you let him know when hiring season begins at your school, I think that's more than fair.

  • I wouldn't tell him until probably the end of the school year, and only then if you are 100% sure. Of course, if he's difficult, make sure all your ducks are in a row as far as maternity leave/pay, because you don't want to end up fighting for what you deserve simply because the school knows you aren't coming back.
