Thunderclap... (Update)

I will call my OB office in an hour when they open and ask, but I was just wondering if anyone has had experience with thunderclap headaches during their pregnancy.

At least that's what I think I have... Sudden onset headaches around a 7/8 pain level triggered from inhaling through my nose too hard or from gagging, etc. Pain is always in the same spot and dissipates over time, but man, the initial pain is blinding.

(Took my bp the other day at one of those pharmacy machines after an "episode" and it was fine.)

I did Google, but didn't find anything specific to pregnancy. If anyone has any input until I reach my OB (ie. If this is just a common pregnancy plight), please share.

Update: spoke to OB and they said to take Tylenol Extra Strength. So there we go...

Do you have a history of migraines? Never heard of them before so here is what I found from mayo clinic. Based on them saying it is "...uncommon, but they can be a warning sign of potentially life-threatening conditions — usually having to do with bleeding in and around the brain..." you might want to call the on-call service versus waiting an hour.

  • How long do they last? I've had a couple sudden bursts like that-- a bit like a head-rush headache when I am menstruating --accompanied with some dizziness, but they last less than 30 seconds. It's like BANG and then it's over.

    Haven't had one for awhile...

Hope it is nothing more serious than that
  • @CandEChicago‌ no history of migraines and I'm only guessing that's what it is based on symptoms. And at the risk of sounding really unprepared and dumb, I don't know their on-call number.

@Mousy345‌ the bad wave of pain is over in a minute or less, but the headache will last for hours after the initial onset.

Try calling into their main office line. They typically have an answering service or provide the number.

  • Hmmm. I am sorry to hear that. I have no suggestions so am glad you're going in for an appointment.
  • No experience but I hope it gets better soon! Keep us posted!

Stupid auto correct. Looks like you saw it before my edit went through to correct it it "calling into"

  • @hollycn: do you wear glasses? I have eye problems and my prescription changes a lot. One of the first signs that I need to get my eyes looked at again is headaches that often start with a really painful burst and then linger all day. No pain meds really seem to help. It is like a dull nagging pain all day that I can't escape from. It sends me running to the optometrist every time.

I am just making the suggestion in the hope that you can stop worrying prior to your OB appt. :)
