placental abruption vs bloody show/early labor

I am 40w1d....experienced what I think was the bloody show earlier this evening around 5:30. Had some mild cramping afterwards...but no real contractions. I was resting and drinking water....just went to the bathroom and had red blood when wiping with a small clot. Can the bloody show continue as spotting? This is red blood...not pink or brown. Trying to stay calm and relax...monitor the spotting/bleeding. Baby is moving like crazy - which he is more active later at night. Just curious if anyone has any experience with this?

  • General rule for me: red blood = call your doctor.
    Better safe than sorry.

  • @megbanachek‌ I did call....dr said she thinks its the mucus plug. If bleeding gets heavier to call back/go to hospital. Dr didn't seem to be concerned that the blood is red. So I guess I'll just monitor it and see what happens.
  • Low cramping is getting a little stronger...I am up and on the couch. It's almost 5am. Passing small clots when I pee..... sometimes blood/mucus when I wipe, sometimes not. Drinking some water now, plan to call the Dr.'s office once they open hoping they can see me just to be sure everything is fine!
  • Glad you called your doctor. My friend had suspected placental abruption and there was a LOT of blood. She was in Target and thought she peed herself and reached down and realized there was blood everywhere. I think the smaller amount isn't so concerning but it's definitely a good idea to have it checked out.

Hopefully you're in the early stages of labour!
  • Hopefully! @AnnieRoo13‌ what did it end up being with your friend?
