30 weeks and trouble sleeping

Hello, I made this profile to follow my girlfriends pregnancy. I wanted a tracker also to see what things our little girl would be learning from week to week. With that we are currently in our 30th week and my gf is not able to sleep and is obviously having trouble getting comfortable to try and sleep. We have used a body pillow and different sleeping positions. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what has worked for them or what we could try?

Re: 30 weeks and trouble sleeping

  • Welcome! Unfortunately, insomnia at this stage is normal and most of us are dealing with it. It's a combo of being physically uncomfortable, having to pee a lot, and lack of sleep due to hormones.

  • I find taking a bath before I go to bed helps a lot, and trying to limit how much I drink past 8pm.

  • I try to get into bed a while before I actually expect to be asleep. Staying quiet and reading or watching tv (whatever is more relaxing and less stimulating) helps me wind down.
  • Lol um welcome to the club?

  • Sleeping isn't always going to be easy when you're pregnant, it's just part of the gig. I use lots of memory foam pillows and also headphones so I can listen to podcasts.

  • Hello at 3:30am. Pregnancy insomnia is pretty common, especially in 3rd trimester. For me it's a combination of not being able to get comfortable, having to pee, wanting water, having a lot on my mind, etc.

Be sure to talk to her before bed, offer to get pillows, water, etc. If she gets up during the night and you wake up, ask her if she's ok and if you can get anything for her. Don't be watching the tv loudly or something like that when she's trying to sleep. Beyond that, there's not a lot you can do.
  • At 30 weeks as well and sleep this past week has been impossible. Tonight I tried to prob my pillows up and sleep almost at an incline, or sitting up. My lungs and diaphragm feel so crowded that I can't get comfortable laying down. Unfortunately I only fell asleep like that for 20 minutes . I agree with all the other posts, try to be considerate when she is trying to sleep. Body pillows or extra pillows to place between her knees/legs.
    Good luck .

  • Hmmm I have been trying everything...so here is my suggestion.
    1. Pillows, a must, snoogle...the best due to contour, not sure if you are using a normal body pillow.
    2. If you are dealing with body pain. I use a heating pad about an hour before bed on lower back and drink like 4 oz of tonic water before bed. This has helped me. (tonic water known to help with stiffness and muscle spasms)
    3. If 2 doesn't work, a bath...is a great idea to relax you maybe add some lavender oil
    4. Massage from DH or perhaps going to see a chiropractor you may need to be realigned.
    5. Chamomile/ Sleepy time tea is in my normal to do as well with my heating pad...lulls me pretty well.
    6. Tylenol regular strength right before bed to help ease muscles. Or even some melatonin.

Now lol...these I have used all together or switch them up, they have improved my sleeping. Its not pre-pregnancy sleep but hey its def better than what i have been getting.

    GOOD LUCK!!!

  • Thank you ladies!! I do my best to give her all the room she needs and I am usually a body pillow haha. We have tried a lot of these. I was hoping for a new amazing treatment, oh well, we will try the chamomile tea and see if that helps.
  • Maybe late for this but how is your mattress? We have a sleep number which is great bc you can adjust during pregnancy when you might need a firmer or softer mattress. It's a huge investment though. But maybe getting a pillow top pad or egg crate pad could help? Good luck! I think others have made some good suggestions--sorry there doesn't seem to be a magic answer!
  • My OB told me I can take Benadryl once in a while. I don't because I don't like how it makes me feel but it's nice to know it's an option. She also suggested that we could talk about other meds if it continued to be a problem or interfered with my ability to do my job. It might be worth bringing this up with your GF's OB if it's getting to that point and nothing else has helped. Good luck!

I agree on these suggestions as they have helped me. I havent tried tonic water though but sounds like a good idea.
  • I sometimes sleep better with no hubby in bed, cause I can stretch out across the whole bed. Sometimes I am up, sometimes sideways, three point turns. Up to pee.... sometimes I am up for a couple hours then back down....

  • I used Unisom sleep tabs for first trimester nausea and they also gave me great sleep. Right now I am sleeping well enough that I'm not taking them, but I do expect that I will have to start again in a few weeks as belly gets bigger and more uncomfortable.

One thing that helped me was to read that getting less sleep during pregnancy is not harmful to you or the baby. Stressing about an inability to go to sleep makes it worse. So I either relax in bed if I feel like doing that, or I get up and do something that I like to do if that's more what I feel like. I can take a nap later, and usually if I am lacking one night I will get more the next night.
