Reacting to wedding ring

I'm starting to react to my wedding ring- itchy and red where it rubs against finger. I googled it and realize it's normal, but in trying to find some remedies so I can keep wearing my wedding ring. Anyone gone thru this? Any suggestions to make it better? I would be sad to not wear my ring. :(

TIA!

Re: Reacting to wedding ring

  • I have a ring that does this to my finger every time I wear it. I can't wear it at all.

Maybe take it off and wait until after you have our baby? Maybe your body is weirdly rejecting what its made of right now.

  • I will do that if I have to. I'm just hoping to keep wearing it.

Maybe I'll look into some cortisone cream and see if that clears it up.
  • It might clear it up temporarily but if the ring is causing it it will probably just come back.

  • I would steer clear of cortisone cream, I had a pharmacist tell me not to use it while I was pregnant

  • Thanks, racheltherose!
  • I started having this issue when I was pregnant with DD and it has never gone away. I only wear my wedding rings when I go out now and always take them off when I am washing my dishes or my hands. Trapped moistre seems to make it much, much worse. You can use Aquaphor on the rash and it clears up pretty quickly!

  • Wear a band aid around your finger under your band. Worked for me :-)
  • I had the same problem. I took off my wedding band bc it's just a little smaller then my diamond. Since I've done that it's been so much better! My husband doesn't like it but I couldn't stand feeling like I had fire ants under my rings.
  • I had the same issue w one of the other pregnancies (I find it so strange that every pregnancy is so different)- watching for moisture, band-aid, and Vaseline all helped!
  • I'm allergic to nickel to the point that I can't handle trace amounts for more than half a day without a reaction. If that's what this is, I can't think of a permeant solution other than to wear it over your clothes on a chain.

In the meantime, if you let it heal (no contact for a week or two) and get your ring coated in by a jeweller in a nickel free covering then you will be ok until the covering wears off.

If it isn't an allergy then it is likely irritation due to trapped moisture. Be sure to take your ring off when washing your hands and drying them completely before putting the ring back on.
  • I've had the same thing and gave up on wearing my rings back in August.  Apparently it's a reaction to the nickel that's in the gold/white gold in trace amounts.  As mentioned above you can get the ring rhodium plated and that will help.

Oddly enough, I still have a scaly ring finger even though I haven't had a ring on it for 3 months.  But that's probably since I haven't really been diligent about moisturizing.

  • Have you tried cleaning your rings? I had this issue last year (i broke out in an itchy rash) and i followed instructions for deep cleaning i found online and it completely stopped the problem. You soak rings in a vinegar/peroxide solution for a bit and then boil to kill anything else that is left. Worked like a charm.

  • My rings are off for this very reason.  I've tried to be careful about water/soap getting trapped beneath, but the ring still breaks out my finger.  I finally threw in the towel.

This.  You probably have a fungus, especially for those who notice it worsening when wet.  Try cleaning and pouring some boiling water over them before giving up!

  • I have never tried this and I'd do more research before doing it but I have heard you can put a layer of clear nail polish to act as a barrier. Again I've never done it and it may not apply to real jewelry only costume.

  • This happened to me a few months ago. I stopped wearing my ring for a week and lathered the sore spot on my finger with cocunut oil or cetaphil lotion until it healed. I had a jeweler clean my ring. And I started removing my ring when doing dishes and washing my hands. Pretty sure my issue was the moisture trap that others have mentioned.
