Hats & Mittens

I have a girl on FB that had a baby 2 weeks ago and lots of her pictures (inside) have the LO wearing a hat. Are these necessary? I have some baby hats and assumed I would put them on her when we'll be outside since it will be cold/snowy.  Are they necessary indoors? I realized after looking at her pics that I have no clue.

And those mitten things.. so they don't scratch their faces, did you guys use these for previous LO's? I don't have any and thought maybe I should get some?

... just my stupid clueless questions of the day :)

Re: Hats & Mittens

  • I used the mitts until I was comfortable cutting baby's nails. I think my mom brought me some in the hospital. My boys were both born with pretty long fingernails.
My kids were both born in May so I didn't use hats except outside at first. I don't know about that one. I have a couple hats. I guess I'll decide at the time.
  • Loading the player...
  • I used the mitten things, but never used a hat indoors. Maybe they keep their house super cold or something, or maybe the kid has a really bad cone head ;)
  • The user and all related content has been deleted.
  • Unless your house is freezing, I don't know why baby would need a hat indoors. As for the mitten things, it kind of depends on your baby. My daughter was never really a face-scratcher, so we didn't need them. There are a lot of babies who will really scratch their faces up though. Maybe get a pair or two just in case?

  • I would use socks on their hands instead of those mittens. They're a waste of money after a couple months.  They're good if your baby has long nails at first.  I also hated cutting their nails and found them to be so fragile that they could peel right off.

Hats would go on their heads if there was a chill in the air.

  • I forget when it's ok to start cutting nails, but the nurses will tell you when baby is born. I used mitts or socks occasionally, but I much prefer the gowns or jammies that have fold over sleeves. They work much better because they can't be pulled off and dropped.

Re: hats, it takes a couple of days for most babies to start efficiently regulating their own body temperature. So hats are good at first, but normally only for a couple of days. I don't really use hats after being discharged from hospital.

  • My son's nails were long when he was born I kept mittens on him as not to scratch him self while crying. The day we came home I left him with my brother while I showered and came back to him telling me my son was bleeding because he cut his nails with a clipper. I was furious. I purchased a 3 pack of scratch mittens for this LO. Alot of the newborn sleepers have a fold over part that will cover their hands. The infant hat is used because it helps them stay warm, most of their heat escapes from their head. They kept one on him in the hospital but I didn't when we got home.

  • Some of my friends are big fans of the sleeves that fold over due to the nail thing. I like the sock idea too.

I can see myself putting a thin hat on her indoors bc our apt gets very drafty and I'm cold in here a lot. I'm going I worry that she's warm enough.
  • I used hand mittens everyday in those first couple months. LOs like to touch their face and poke their own eyes, so it's nice to have their hands covered so they don't accidentally hurt themselves. Also- clothes that have them built in are great IMO.

I didn't use hats inside. I think a lot of people use hats(especially in photos) to cover their baby's cone head. :)

I used the mittens with outfits that didn't have the foldover sleeves and also when we were going out in the cold because the fleece coverups I had didn't have foldover sleeves to keep their hands warm.  I used hats in the hospital, when we were leaving the house, and at bedtime for a little while.

  • I didn't use hats indoors. I did use mittens but mostly at night because her little hands got really cold!! They're intended to keep them from scratching themselves.

ETA: Many baby PJs or other tops have fold-over hands/mittens, if that makes sense. The sleeves are long and have a part the flips over the hand to make a mitten.
I was going to say the same thing! The white onesies that the hospital provided had those too. We had packed some mittens but didn't end up using them til we got home.

We kept a hat on her in some rooms of our house until she was 2 weeks old. Our home is older and doesn't have the bet insulation some places.

  • I never really used either of them, my daughter was born in September though. I could see maybe using hats this winter if it is really cold.
  • I used the mittens but I had a summer baby so I never used the hats. I've been wondering the same thing though.

I'll have to ask what the hospital offers here. I'm gonna get some mittens online, too, just in case.

We also have an old house. We haven't lived up here in Canada for winters yet, so I don't know what it will be like. But I know *I* get cold sometimes in houses in the winter. I wear a hoodie a lot over my head to stay warm, so it makes sense that some babies wear hats inside.   Guess I'll see when the time comes.

    Thanks everyone!

  • It depends. We didn't use the mitts past about the first week because my two wouldn't keep them on and we never had a scratching problem.

The hats we used for a few weeks because I felt it was too cold for the baby if they didn't even inside. My babies were born with almost no hair on top of the usual lack of ability to regulate their body temp. I don't think it's going to hurt if you choose not to put the hats on, but I personally thought mine fussed less when they were all warm and toasty.
  • DS didn't wear hats.  literally. he'd pull them off if i tried to put them on him, up until he was about 18m old. that first winter was interesting.  if baby girl will allow hats she'll probably be wearing the thinner cotton ones indoors, simply because our house is older and kind of cold/drafty.  he mostly wore the jammies/onesies with the foldover cuffs, but i had some mittens for him too.  he was definitely a face-scratcher.

I used the mittens for a few weeks because DS was scratching his face and everytime I would start to nurse him he would scratch my boobs! No matter how much we filed them they were so sharp.

We only used hats if we were going out. DS was born in April. I might used a light hat indoors with this LO since our house tends to be cool.

  • Like PPs said, I think the mittens would be more to prevent scratching her face with fingernails.  We actually just went to a baby class a couple nights ago which said hats should not be worn inside, especially when sleeping.  They can cause overheating.
  • I used thin cotton hats and mittens inside the house because the baby is used to being warm and cozy inside the womb.

  • @MusicFanatic‌ I also brought a space heater into the rooms we would stay in for the majority of the day to keep it warmer. (And our room at night)

    Jan 15  NOV siggy challenge:

  • No hats unless we went out. My DD was a hot little thing. Once in a while I'd put them on her in the house, but she always got super sweaty. I loved those mittens though. When DD nursed she liked to rub my boob and her nails were so thin they were like razors and she would scratch me pretty good. I would not always have the mittens on her, but definitely did when she nursed.
  • I rarely did hats inside, but I did the mittens a lot like PPs said to keep him from scratching himself. The best were the fold-down shirts like this because DS couldn't take them off.
  • We didn't wear hats except for the hospital. December in Florida wasn't warm enough for them. I'm glad you asked this question :) I'm thinking if I'm comfortable the baby will also be, and since I plan on keeping the house warm I don't think we'll need to wear them inside but we'll see.

The mitts are awesome, but DS would always lose one and scratch himself. So I prefer the onesies with the flip sleeve. You could also chew the babies nail off, until you feel comfortable with clipping the nails, or a baby nail file works as well.
    image
  • We used hats after baths at first when indoors. Never used scratch mitts. I just kept up with filing down those tiny daggers.

I could hold you for a million years to make you feel my love.
  • I never used hats at home or even outside since my babies were born in May, June, and August. I think I maybe used them inside if the AC was on really high or something, My firstborn had a huge head though so none of the infant hats fit her anyway. They usually give you some hats at the hospital and I think you can prob get mits from them too if you ask. I did use the mits with one of my kids, I think it was my son who used to scratch his head like crazy when he slept.
  • I had a hat on my daughter every day for like 7 months. It was usually a thin hat if we were inside, thicker hats outside, bonnets in the spring/summer. I lived with a crazy aunt who ingrained it into my head that babies always need hats. Our house was a bit colder because it was old and drafty. If we were in a warmer house and she seemed to be overheating I would take the hat off.

I usually just folded over the sleeves on the sleepers, but didn't go crazy on the mitts. She wasn't really a scratchy baby.

This is going to be your first Canadian winter? You're in southern Ontario, right? Hats. For you. For baby. For everyone. And socks inside the sleepers. My doctors rule of thumb for dressing baby is whatever you are wearing plus one layer. If you're comfortable in a teeshirt and hoodie and jeans/sweats then baby needs all of that plus an undershirt and hat.
@TRexsMum- hah.. yes, this is my first Canadian winter and yes- chatham-kent area. So cold. But we're coming from upstate NY so we're used to cold and snow.  But I imagine it's even worse up here? Lots of people gave us hats, so I was thinking.. "they must know something I don't?" :)

  • @TRexsMum‌ same here! Horrid winter longest winter ever and this year is supposed to be worse

My husband would say toque and he wouldn't be happy that I'm calling it a winter hat ;)

8 feet, the heck!  We average about 5.5 feet back in NY where we lived, and that's a lot. (64" is our average).   STAY outta my thread with this garbage!
