How often is your LO pooping?

I posted this in 0-3 months and no responses yet, so I figure I'd ask you ladies :)
My DS is 8 weeks old, and, about a week ago, he has only been pooping one big poop every 2-3 days. I know stools taper off the older they get, but it seems like he is just trying to poo so hard, sometimes and like he is uncomforyable because he's not popping as often as he was. I plan to call the pedi on Monday, but I've heard different things from different drs. FWIW: DS is EBF, his poops are soft and kind of runny, and normal colored. I've had his regular pedi say it's normal, but his specialists kind of side eye me when I told them his stool pattern, and they said to keep an eye on it. Any Experiences or advice on this is much appreciated . TIA

  • I've heard it's normal for EBF babies to go longer without pooping. DS still has several a day though. As long as baby seems fine it should be ok. I know I would be wondering too if he all of sudden started going several days between stools too! Even with knowing its normal.

  • DS just turned 8 weeks and is EBF as well. I was wondering about this poop issue as well because my LO did a 4 day stretch of no poop and then had a massive blow out the next morning. I asked the pediatrician at his 2 month appt and she said its normal as long as he doesn't seem uncomfortable and the poos are still soft/liquid and seedy not hard which would be a sign of constipation. His belly is never distended either. She said breast fed babies can go up to a week with no poop. I would say my son averages one good size poop every 2-3 days
  • My little guy poops many times a day still. It is slowly becoming less frequent now. Breast milk is vert easily digested and babies will digest and use nearly all of what is broken down in BM so they can go longer between pooping than ff babies. I would get the opinion of your dr just to be sure and call right away if baby seems uncomfortable or in pain.

DS is mostly breastfed (we're still supplementing with one 2-oz bottle of formula a day), and he poops about every other day, but will go as long as 4 or 5 days between. My pedi said up to a week of no poop is ok, but if he starts to seem really uncomfortable or in pain from it, to give 1/2 oz of prune juice. We've only had to do that once.

This. DS gets one 4oz bottle of formula at night and usually has one big poop every 2-3 days.

  • I'm getting a bit of a giggle from all the poop threads.. Only moms and nurses get excited about poop lol..(im both )

Omg!! Right?!? My husband HATES it!! I'm a nurse and a mom, I can literally talk about anything, anytime. Sometimes he's sitting there horrified, and asks me if I can please just stop!! Lol as a nurse, poop is a really big deal at work!

LO is FF, so I'm a little different here, but she has a horrible time pooping. Struggles very hard, screams bloody murder! Her poor little tummy bloats like crazy. I've been calling her poops, rabbit poop! Because it looks like little rocks. Sorry for tmi! The pedi gave me lactulose to give her, he said after she was "cleaned out" I might not have to use it again. But the next poop is hard and she's going crazy. So she gets it about once or twice a day. :(
  • Thank you guys!! I feel a little better now, and, FTR, DS just had a huge blowout today. Lol.
But, even though his tummy isn't distended and his poo seems pretty normal, I think I will still call the pedi in Monday, as he seems fussy when he doesn't poo, but calms down after a massive blowout.
  • I know right around a month and a half we went a week with no poo. I called the ped, she said it was normal,  told us to give prune juice and if she hadn't gone in the morning then to come in. Well she hadn't gone and she had us come in to check her out, just to be on the safe side. She felt her up and said she didn't feel any hard masses and that she felt some soft poo. She gave us a treatment plan (half a suppository) to get her moving. Well I will say it was like 5 diapers full by the time she went. H and I got a good laugh out of it. Since then she's gone every 2-3 days. Until this week where she's back to almost daily sometimes multiple ones a day.

TL;DR- we went a week with no poo and it was okay because it was soft poop. Generally she averages every 2-3 days. We're just shy of 3 months now, she's fed bm (in bottles), and has had this poop pattern since about 1.5months old.

  • My LO will go through the night with only wet diapers and then a good poop shows up! I've noticed the difference but he has also gone longer in between feedings now so I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

  • Mine is 9.5wks and fills up her diaper once a day. Occasionally, she will get more squirmy at night, then we will bike her legs until she lets out some farts or even some poop. She is EBF.

  • I'm glad you asked bc we have same situation. DD used to go a few times a day, but past few weeks she'll go about every 3 days.

  • Just had similar situation with LO. Her belly was super bloated, and she was crying uncontrollably, unless she was eating. Had to give her a suppository to help her go. Ped had us change her to Alimentum formula and she pooped about 36 hours after switching.
