Holiday gifts for daycare workers

Do you plan on either tipping your daycare providers or giving them a gift? There are 4 ladies in her room but one of them is her main caretaker. Should I give them all the same amount or the one girl more?
What do you plan to do?

Re: Holiday gifts for daycare workers

  • I am not sure how all daycares work but when I worked at one I wasn't the main teacher but we all still did about the same amount of work. We helped plan things as well so the main teacher did teach the lessons but we helped her plan and get things ready for them and we all shared the other responsibilities. So if you do decide to do gifts I would probably so something for all of them but if the main person does a lot more then you could always do something different for her and smaller for the other ladies. There are some cute ideas on Pinterest. As a teacher I always liked gift cards because I spent a lot of my money on supplies and things so a gift card to target was nice or if she drinks coffee one to Starbucks or something.

  • I won't be tipping, but if I find a cute little gift I will get it for his teacher.

  • I asked my friend who works at a daycare for ideas and she said anything like a body lotion/shower gel, gift card, candy, cute mug, etc is appropriate, maybe around $15-25 in value depending on your relationship with them.

  • We do in home but I plan on getting her a Yankee Candle or something of the sorts.

  • I worked in daycare for awhile and usually the main caregiver got a slightly larger gift. I got alot of gift cards. They would sometimes give me a gift card for more money than the others. Not all the time though.
  • Food. We always do food for all. Bagels and cream cheese, muffins, cupcakes, etc.

I plan on doing a larger gift card for the 2 women that are always in DDs room and then maybe a $5-10 gift card for all of the other ladies that help with her during the day. As a teacher I always get soooo many candles/mugs/candies/etc. so I won't buy that for someone else. I of course appreciate any gift from a student but feel bad when things people get me are wasted or not used and gift cards can always be used.
That's kind of what I was thinking about candles, lotions, etc.  I"m worried I'll get some smell they don't like or they'll have too many random soaps, mugs, etc.

It sounds like no one is planning on actually tipping them (cash or check).  I like the idea of gift cards but didn't want to stiff the ladies if they generally get tips!

    Thanks all!

I worked in one for 12 years. I was an assistant teacher and moved up to a teacher then the assistant director.

First if all, we were never insulted by the "main" teacher getting more, but be sure that teacher really does the majority of the care for your child. It amazed me how often parents had no clue who was with their child regularly. Sometimes the lead teacher is with your kid for a few hours and the assistant is with them longer.

Food is always a great gift!!! We had pretzel trays and then people order pizza for us. All greatly appreciated.

Honestly if I got one more candle or bath and body item is go nuts. Still storing the stuff from when I left a year and a half ago. Think out of the box when it comes to those items. Get a candle that has a decorative holder or something.
One time we all got $5 giftcards to starbucks and were thrilled. Be creative or go on Pinterest, but really it is the thought that counts.
  • I've never heard of "tipping" caregivers, teachers or even camp counselors and bus drivers until recently. I'd say a small gift is the way to go.
  • I'm a teacher and would say the thing I like the most is a heartfelt note. We really pour our lives into the kids!

Beyond that a gift card is nice! I have a million mugs and weird lotions but anything is nice but not necessary.

  • Last year for my oldest son, he had two teachers and I got them each a $15 gift card to Target and then a pair of those cozy holiday socks. In the past, I have also gotten pedicure gift certificates to the nail place right near the daycare center, they are about $15-20 typically.

I was actually thinking cash might be desired more though...

I'm doing cash for Christmas. I figure, that's what I would want...

DD just finished her first week at DC and on Friday I gave the two girls thank you cards and $25 Starbucks g/c. It's important to me that they feel valued and know that I appreciate them. After all, they are looking after the person most important to me
  • i plan to give her teachers target gift cards.
