Breastfeeding

Being away from baby while traveling

Hi All!  I have an almost 5 month old EBF little girl and will be taking a short trip away from her to go to a job interview.  I'll be gone 3 days, 2 nights.  I work during the day (pumping 2 times while I am work) so I am used to pumping and she is used to bottle-feeding.  She BFs when I am home, generally every 3-4 hours and once or twice overnight.  My questions are these:

1)  How many times should I be planning to pump during the day.  I generally pump more than she eats, so I could probably get away with pumping 5 times and get enough milk to cover her for the day.  Should I plan to pump more often than this, or will 5 times/day be OK?

2)  Will my milk supply be OK if I don't pump overnight?  I would really REALLY love to get a full night's sleep while I am away :)

3)  For people who have done this with a similar aged baby, did your LO have any trouble returning to the breast after you returned?  I hope to continue BFing for a long time (my son self-weaned at 3 years) and I would really hate for her to "forget how" or refuse the breast.

4)  Any other tips to share about traveling without baby?

Thanks!

Re: Being away from baby while traveling

  • Thank you for sharing your (encouraging) story!  It really does relieve some of my anxiety about this.  I really have no problem leaving her for the day to go to work, but this seems so much harder somehow.

Thanks also for the link to the thread about traveling with BM.  I thought I had it all figured out, but you gave some great advice that is making me re-think my "plan".
