How many bottles/how much formula?

I just stopped nursing and can't seem to figure out the best bottle schedule. We were nursing 6 times a day, but LO doesn't want to take a bottle nearly that often. I did 5 bottles a day  for the first few days (6 oz each) and he's not wanting that much either - chewing on the bottle and spitting it out half full. Is four 6 oz bottles a day normal at 9 months?  Google seems to think so, but thought I'd ask around here.

ETA to add that he eats a lot of table food, and a jar here and there.

Re: How many bottles/how much formula?

  • Is it bad that I have NO idea? I just basically fill bottles all day long and offer them to her as the day goes by.

If I had to guess, I'd say she drinks about five 3-4oz bottles during the day, and then takes another 8-10oz overnight.

    But again, I'm totally guessing.

  • We do 5 bottles a day (formula) plus 3 solids meals but I'm trying to eliminate one bottle soon.

  • 4 8oz bottles every 4ish hours, but he's always been a big eater. I had supply issues back in the day and by the time I was able to pump 3 ounces in a sitting, he was ready to get 5 ounces!

About 3 hours after a bottle we do a solid (banana, veggies, or other item).  You're probably just fine with 6oz. If he's seeming hungry more often, just add an extra ounce and if he drinks it, great, if not, oh well. I was always worried about overfeeding LO. He's chunky but not unhealthy.
  • 5 bottles a day (roughly 5 oz each, sometimes less in the morning and more right before bed) and 3 solid meals.
  • DD eats between 4 and 6 bottles a day, anywhere from 3 to 6oz per bottle. Our pedi said babies average 16-24 oz of milk a day at this age, so I would say 4-6oz bottles is totally fine!

I would love any tricks for anticipating the amount of formula babies will eat... I have dumped WAY too much the last few weeks... (We always make 6oz bottles, and have been dumping some of almost every bottle it seems, here lately)

  • 3 6ozers: breakfast (with oatmeal and sometimes fruit), lunch and snack. Dinner time is solids and usually 6, but maybe 8, ounces before bed. He doesn't eat overnight (rare exception over the past 5 months)

  • Thanks for all the info!  I know I went through this with DS1 and DS2 but I have no memory of mundane things like bottle schedules.  So, my advice is to take notes for you to review when you have #2 or #3. :)

  • Thanks for posting this! I was actually curious where we stood in terms of feeding, this is helpful.

We're also in the "5 bottles, trying to get down to 4" club. We offer 6oz most of the time, but she's not finishing all of them.. I would say she's "leaving" 4-6oz a day in total, so she's ready to reduce the amount, but I just can't figure out the schedule.

  • During the day 4 6oz bottles. Then overnight another 8-10 oz.
  • We do 5 bottles a day - I send 6 oz bottles to DC and they say she finishes all of them. When I'm at home I usually make a 4 oz bottle and then if she is still hungry I add another 2 oz and give that. Usually at least one bottle a day will be just the four ounces. She also eats lots of purees and table food.
