Breastfeeding

really done in 5 minutes?

hello... i've been MIA- work has been kicking my butt super hard...!

LO recently has been shortening her sessions by A LOT more than i'm used to.  it used to take her roughly 25-30 min each nursing session (avg 5 times in 24 hours) - with time split between each breast.  the last few days she's being chowing down on 1 side in 5 minutes and then i can't get her to want to eat any more. sometimes she will skip the other breast altogether.  has she become this efficient in such a short amount of time? is there something i should be doing instead?  she just turned 6 months. we haven't started any solids yet - i'm waiting to visit the pedi next wk for her 6m fu

  • It's possible that she is just becoming more efficient, which does happen.  However, it would be odd that it went from 25-30 minutes to 5 minutes in a short amount of time.  It's could be teething, or something else that's off and bugging her, like her ears.  I would just keep an eye on her wet diapers, make sure she is still having plenty of them and talk the pedi next week.

i'm going to keep track of her diapers better
could she also be just rejecting my breast? :(

  • Babies do go through nursing strikes, but full on weaning at 6 months old would be very rare. I think it's likely a combo of her being sick, being more efficient and being at a really distractable age.  Just keep offering, and watch those diapers :) Offering sippy cups of water to help with hydration while she's sick are a good idea too.  I think at 6 months, I could offer up to 4 ounces a day.  Good luck!
