Green Poop

LO has had consistent green poop for over a week. He is EBF and takes one side at a time, so he is draining it at each feed. I don't think it's an issue with foremilk/hindmilk. It also has an odd scent. I have nothing to equate it to. It's really strange, totally unlike poop. His two month check up is this week, but I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience.

Re: Green Poop

  • My LO had green poop for a bit and when I brought it up to his pedi, she said that if it wasn't frothy and he wasn't fussy, that it wasn't something to really worry about. It finally went away last week. Just see what your pedi says!

  • Not sure what your diet is like , but I've heard babies with a dairy intolerance, or an allergy in general, may have green poop. Like @nilvero‌ said, I'd talk to your pedi.
  • I'm having the same experience and am waiting to hear back from pediatrician. Also nursing only on one side at a time. She also is fussy and spits up quite a bit. I'm wondering if green poop can mean dairy intolerance.

I agree with PPs. If LO is acting fine then probably not anything to worry about but ask your pediatrician. DS1 was very fussy with reflux and green mucousy poop. It turned out that he had an egg allergy.

  • I was coming on here to look around on this same topic! Ds's poops aren't consistently green though so i don't know what to think because I've heard if it's dairy it takes a couple of weeks to clear out of your system. Please keep us posted. Wish I had better answers.
  • Agree to get it checked by Dr for sure, but if LO isn't fussy, is gaining well, there's no blood and you've ruled out a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance I wouldn't worry. Lo #1 (ebf) had consistently green poop until he started solids. I was beside myself obsessing and googling, Dr ran tests at my request but she wasn't concerned. She said their digestive systems develop so much in the first year that they can do lots of weird things until they settle.

I never did do an elimination diet though so it could have been a dairy sensitivity or another allergy but if it was he outgrew it, he's 2 now and drinks milk and eats all kinds of food with no problem.

  • I had this issue. I cut dairy from my diet and the poop is back to normal!!!

  • When I eat a lot of dairy this happens to LO, I'm talking a bowl of ice cream or a milk shake. But he never seems bothered by it and it goes away after one poop so I've never worried
  • Thanks, ladies! He had a couple regular ones this morning then it went pack to the odd smelling green. Hopefully his pedi can shed some light on this on Wednesday.
