Update in comments : Protein in urine

Hello ladies
I just had my 32 weeks checkup, they found some protein in my urine but my MFM said she is isn't concerned since my blood pressure is normal and I have no other symptoms. She said I could have a UTI which can cause for protein to be found in urine and she will send it to the lab. Did you experience this? I don't want to stress about just yet!

Re: Update in comments : Protein in urine

  • I had protein in my urine starting at 24w. My BP was borderline, so I did the 24hr and that came back fine.

At 32w, I had some borderline BP again and the 24hr urine came back elevated, so I spent a wkend in the hospital and an official pre-e dx. I was to have weekly bloodwork from then on out and my end date was abbreviated to 37w max.

My water broke completely unrelated to the pre-e at 34w and I had no problems w BP post-delivery.

  • Also, even though my pre-e didn't progress quickly, it is far more common for it to become a very big problem very quickly.

I wouldn't worry, but I would take note of any symptoms that could relate back to pre-e. I also used to go to the grocery store and spot-check my BP. I'm the type that needs info, so it wasn't out of worry - each reading was a data point.

  • I'm 36+ 3 and my BP is starting to creep up but just a trace amount of protein in urine. When do you go back? I'm getting checked every few days now bc of the pre-e risk.

  • I am going in two weeks so at 34 weeks. She said I have traces of blood in my urine (which happened last time as well) but when they sent it to lab it was clean. I am going to pass by pharmcy tomorrow to check my blood pressure and see.
  • I had protein for about 2 weeks before my BP skyrocketed and I was induced. I had between +1 and +3 and was monitored every other day. On the day I was induced protein was +4 and blood pressure was 200/100-something. I was 34 weeks and 5 days pregnant. As long as you're being monitored closely I wouldn't worry too much.

  • I can't remember when (probably around 30-32 weeks) but my BP was borderline at one visit so out of caution the midwife made me do the 24 hour urine test. The protein was elevated but not high enough to be alarming. They made me do another one to see if it would stay the same or go down.

I ended up doing it about 3-5 times and each time it kept getting elevated even though my BP remained normal so by 36 weeks they said it was too high and I needed to be admitted for monitoring. By this time my feet had started swelling a little bit but I had no other physical symptoms.  I was induced  and delivered at 36 weeks 4 days.

I agree with the other posters. Don't worry, however, it might be worth ensuring your healthcare provider is monitoring the situation and test your urine at least twice to be sure and monitor your blood pressure and other physical symptoms (e.g. headaches and feet swelling).

Success to you as you get close to meeting your dear ones.

  • Thank you all! I checked my blood pressure today and it still low I will keep checking it till my next visit and hope it's says low. I read a lot online and some ladies ended up with PE while others were okay. I am praying for the best!
  • I had protein in my urine but everything else was fine. Protein went away and wasn't an issue again.

  • My BP started creeping up approximately two weeks before I had a positive protein strip.  Here's hoping your lack of BP spikes means you'll get to dodge the pre-e :)

  • Update: I checked my bp at the pharmacy yesterday and it was 175/110 so we rushed to hospital in panic mood. I got checked in and they put the babies and myself on monitors, my blood was pressure was 138/76 which was considered ok since I was scared. Got blood tests done which came back good, then my blood pressure returned to normal, I was told I still have protein in my urine and they believe the bp machine at the pharmcy was broken! That was a scary experience , I still have to check my blood pressure everyday. I made sure today to have my hosptial bag ready and all documents etc ready incase I need to go back to hospital like last night. It was scary but i am glad all is well for now!
