Breastfeeding

Feeling like my BF baby is not as content as my FF babies were :(

He is 2 wks 3 days & has yet to gain back birth weight....weighed 8.2 at birth...only weighs 7.12 currently.
If he is not at the breast or using a pacifier, he is upset..I think he is a comfort sucker already....he doesn't know how to keep paci in mouth...I never used a paci w/ my other kids...I'd feed them, they'd be full/happy/content for at least 3 hours....this little boy could eat & as soon as he wakes up from passing out on the breast, he freaks out & wants to be right back on it.....my other kids would have their formula, sleep for a few hours, wake, feed, repeat....BF'ing seems to be so random & all over the place....he just doesn't seem as happy if he's not on me!

  • His behavior is 100% totally and completely normal.  Not only is the continuous nursing biologically normal and essential for bringing in a good milk supply, but wanting to be near mom all of the time is also very normal.  A class I found very interesting when I was pregnant with my first, talked about 0-12 weeks being like a 4th trimester.  Babies have very strong needs for security and being close to his/her parents during this time.  My first baby was 99% formula fed and did seem content for longer in between bottles, and the reason for this is that formula digests much more slowly than breast milk and therefore, baby needs it a lot less frequently.

  • Random- but just saw your ticker @theresat858 and saw Celeste is already over a month old! Wow, time flies! How are things going? How are you feeling going from one to two? It was a big adjustment for me!

  • My first son was only bf for 8 weeks or so before I switched to formula. DS2 is 6 months now and is still EBF. I agree with you that there were times that I thought DS1 was easier since he ff. The big difference was that I could have someone feed him (especially in the motn).
Now, bf sends a lot easier. I don't have to worry about bringing bottles and formula with me when we go out. If he's tired or fussy, I can just nurse him. There aren't a bunch of bottles to wash every night.

Hang in there. It does get easier.

Yes, it does! Good - she's gained about an ounce a day for the past three weeks, and is a fairly easy baby. The toddler is another story...lets just say its good I can still send her to daycare 5 days a week :).
That's awesome weight gain!! Haha thank goodness for daycare! We did the same thing!
