Anyone awake? Would you go to the ER?

So I never threw up during first tri, although I had a lot of nausea and food aversions. I woke up at 1 AM tonight (this morning? whatever the hell 1 AM is) and started violently vomiting. It's been intermittent since then (it's 6 AM here), but I can't even keep a sip of water down. I called my doc at about 4 AM, but they haven't called me back yet. It's not the easiest thing in the world to go to the ER for me right now, as we have a dog who will want attention soon and my DH is out of town, and frankly I'm not sure driving is the safest thing for me right now.

Would you just get in the car and go? Or wait for the doctor to call back?

Re: Anyone awake? Would you go to the ER?

  • I would wait. Could be a stomach bug or something, at most they'd probably give you an iv of fluids and nausea medication and send you home. But if you feel it's that bad, go in.
  • Loading the player...
  • I'm up too. Insomnia. If your only symptom is vomiting then I, personally, would wait for the doctor to call back.
  • I would hang on. If you must go, do urgent care instead of ER if it is at all an option. Keep pushing fluids.

  • Thanks, ladies. I haven't been able to keep any liquids down at all, although the only other option available and that I tried was cold apple cider. We don't keep any kind of soda in the house. This is probably the second time in three years that DH has gone out of town and left me alone (he's off to a family memorial service), so wouldn't you know that this would happen now. I'm contemplating my area friends, but I think I'd try to drive myself before I bothered one of those poor souls on a Saturday morning at 6 AM.

And @snegde, you bet I've used the Doppler tonight! All sounded fine, which was a relief, but I am aware that I'm on my way to serious dehydration.

  • I would wait until you hear back from your doctor. As pp suggested keep drinking something, anything. Maybe try to call your doctor again? Sometimes persistency pays off.
  • Yes I would also wait.

  • My doctor had said 24 hours of throwing up without holding anything down.

I would wait and talk to your office.

I'm sorry. Puking is the worst. I hope it is just a quick bug! Feel better!
  • Lately I find that my vomiting is at its worst when I wake in the middle of the night and first thing in the morning. I am unable to keep anything down during those times, even things that always work to keep nausea at bay during the daytime. That's just my experience, but it's also possible you've caught a bug.

I don't think at this point you need to go to the ER. If it persists and you are unable to keep anything down for 24 hours then I'd say that warrants a visit. I hope your doctor calls you back soon and that you feel better!

  • I think it's finally stopped. I started to Google the difference between gastroenteritis and food poisoning, but I was seeing warnings about how some types can cause still births, so won't be search that anymore. Dr said go to the ER for an IV if I can't get hydrated again. Now I weigh the cost/benefits of sending a friend to the grocery store versus going myself. :-/ Need ginger ale and Gatorade and maybe a soup.

Thanks for taking me down, ladies. Would an urgent care place provide an IV?

  • I've had two stomach bugs since becoming pregnant it's not nice, rest up as much as you can you just have to try and sip water, I think after so many hours if you literally can't keep even water down for 12 hours (could be less) they treat it more serious as you dehydrate and what not but as of a couple of hours they usually tell you to rest and keep as eye on it
  • I'm not sure what you decided but I'm in the same boat. 3 days of the other end problems and now vomiting without keeping even water down. The nurse just said to take small sips of gatoraid and the virus will pass but I'm planning on going in anyway today if I'm not improved. My bump has shrunk which makes me concerned about dehydration and amniotic fluid. Listen to you gut.

I have had an IV at an urgent care. Much better experience than the ER and I was lucky that there was absolutely no wait. But as others suggested just call first to double check.
  • I'm sorry you are dealing with this. Glad it's stopped for now at least.

I would call a friend/family and ask them to bring me some liquids if you need them. I'd also call the urgent cares and ask what they have/do. Some near me will only treat more minor things and if you're having anything they consider more serious they call an ambulance and you end up having to go to the ER anyway. So, if it were me I'd try to have some soup first and wait and see. Good luck and feel better.

  • Was me last week. Had a migraine on top of it. But the only thing that I could keep down and calmed my stomach was dr pepper. Water made it so much worse.

  • Glad to hear the vomiting has stopped I'm sorry you had to go through such a tough night on your own. Stay hydrated~ & no need to go to an ER for an IV, they won't start one right away. Especially if you can take anything by mouth. You might just be sitting around for hours. My local urgent cares does IV hydration if you can not take anything by mouth

  • So sorry you had such a rough night! Sounds like a bug so just stay hydrated and if it doesn't pass soon, an IV may be best. But it seems you're on the right track with the Gatorade and ginger ale... Feel better, lady!
  • Sounds like a bug or food poisoning. I had food poisoning 2 weeks ago. It was awful. That being said, i would definitely ask a friend to bring some chicken noodle soup and gatorade.

Cut the gatorade with water so it's not as sugary bc that can also upset your stomach. Eat and drink slow. Get lots of rest. Also, while everyonr has said watch the dehydration, you also need to make sure you don't spike a fever. If you have a fever higher than 100 degrees, you need to see a doctor as well.

    Hope you feel better!
  • You poor thing! That's awful! I have at least one day a week where I can't keep anything down for about 12 hours. It's the worst! Like pp, my ob said er if I go 18-24 hours. Haven't had to go yet. I find zofran really helps. I also keep drinking fluids even when I'm barfy like that because it feels better than vomiting bile and foam. Hope you keep feeling better!
  • Hope you're feeling better today! Urgent care near me does give IVs. I had a really bad stomach virus last weekend and it was the pits while pregnant...I feel for you. Definitely see if a friend can get you some ginger ale, popsicles, etc. Also, if you are still vomiting can your doctor call in a prescription for Zofran? Zofran really helped me out last weekend.

  • I hope you're feeling better today!
  • Hope you are feeling better so you can enjoy your weekend.
  • Just got over a 24 stomach bug so I feel you! I couldn't keep anything down (food or fluids) for an entire day... I think I managed two tiny sips of water after my last sprint to bathroom before crashing to sleep around 11pm. The thought of calling the GP did cross my mind, but I didn't have a fever (I checked every couple hours) or diarrhea, which would usually come with a bacterial infection, and also read that it takes about 48 hours for risky levels of dehydration to set in. The next morning I eased into tiny amounts of a watered-down electrolyte drink then just kept pushing the fluids. By day three I was pretty much back to normal and baby was kicking away. It is scary though when you feel so ill!
  • Hope you are feeling better! Sorry you had such a rough day yesterday.
