Question for Moms of bigger babies

Hi Ladies,

I am 36 weeks along with my DS, but we just had a scan and he is measuring 7lbs+ at 35w6d, and the doctor expects him to be a big boy based on measurements since my 20 week ultrasounds. I get a few extra ultrasounds for medical reasons, about every 4-8 weeks. I have a DD who was 7lbs at birth, so it is a bit surprising he is so big already, but each kid is different. I know these scans can be up to 2lbs off in either direction so I am not worried about delivery (yet!).

If you had a 9lb+ baby did they wear newborn clothes and diapers? If so, for how long?

We have so many newborn diapers from diaper cakes, gifts and from friends who have had kids outgrow them in the past few weeks.

Thanks for any insight!

Re: Question for Moms of bigger babies

  • DS was 9 lbs 14 oz, skipped all newborn items. DD was 9 lbs and has just graduated from nb diapers at 5 weeks. She was in nb clothes for about 2 weeks.

  • Thanks for the insight ladies. I will hold onto the newborn stuff, and whatever he doesn't use I will pass onto the next mommy to be!
  • Yeah. The estimates are not to be trusted. They kept telling me that DS would be 11 pounds. He was 9 pounds. My DD was also 9 pounds.

Anyway - both of mine used NB diapers. We didn't buy or get any NB clothes for DS because he was always measuring so big. Turns out we needed to buy some NB sleepers for him. With DD we had a few things but were out of them by the first or second week.

Sadly DD is a monster and is growing like a weed (95th in height and 75yh in weight) at 8weeks has outgrown most of her 0-3 month clothes. So many things will never be worn ... :(

  • My LO was average weight (born 8lb 2oz but was 7lb 6oz when she went home from the hospital) but she has a long torso and the NB onesies we had were too short on her after a week. We had to get 3-month ones. So your baby's body shape could also play a role in how most NB stuff will fit. It's good to have a small stash since you just never know until LO is born. We had a small pack of newborn Pampers Swaddlers that we used in the first week. They used size 1 diapers on her in the hospital and those fit a little better so after we ran out of the newborn diapers we went back to using size 1.
  • Thanks for all the insight! I didn't even think about the different body types, DD is long and thin, and we run into her needing 2t pants for length but 18months for waist, so we have been searching out the different brands with elastic waists, so we will see what DS is like once he decides to join us.

    Appreciate all the comparisons :)

  • They said my LO was 8 lbs at 37 weeks. He was born 6lbs 7oz @ 39w 6 days. They were waay off. He is 8 weeks now and just over 9 lbs and he can barely fit into the newborn sizes, but more so because of his height than his weight. He fits 0-3 month clothes better than NB or 3 mo. Like I said, he's 22.5 in, so it's more that he's long than chubby lol
  • Weight estimates cannot be trusted!  My baby was 8.14...no newborn clothes or diapers. Went straight into 0-3/3 month clothes and size 1 diapers.  But I honestly wouldn't be concerned because the weight thing is always tricky.  I knew someone that thought they were having a 9 pound baby so they induced early and the baby ended up being just under 7 pounds!
  • My son was born at 10 lbs 14 oz and skipped nb diapers completely As well as newborn clothes. He only used one box of newborn diapers and then went to size 2. We put him in size 3 by 7 weeks. Clothes are weird. Some things he is fine in 0-3 months, but his range is mostly 3-6 or 6-9 months.

  • When Obgyn measured me at 35w he said that DD is about 6lb so she will be about 7lb easily at birth. I had her at 37w5d and she was 5lb 6 oz- big difference. Just wait and see. Good luck!
  • DS was 9.4. We went straight to size 1 diapers and 0-3 month clothing!
