Transitioning from purees

Point me in the right direction of there's already a thread about this.

I need some tips about adding more table foods into LO's menu.  He is solely on purees right now.  I've tried puffs and if he actually manages to get them into his mouth, he just spits them out.  Just keep trying?  Give him bigger foods that are easier for him to gnaw on?  If he's eating something that we're eating, do I still have to worry about the amount of sodium in it?

  • I just throw whatever I'm eating on his highchair. The hand to mouth coordination takes awhile but he'll get it.

  • I give LO pieces of what we eat. It gets in his mouth with varying degrees of success. As he gets better and better, I'll give him more table food and less purée.

I assume there will still be things I'll have to spoon feed him -- like yogurt, right?

  • It does take time for them to realize they need to swallow it, so don't get discouraged. Just keep offering and they will figure it out. It helps if you are eating at the same time, because he sees you eat it. You can definitely try more chunky purees or go for foods he can pick up (it is actually easier for them to pick up a french fry sized item than pea size. It gives them a "handle") My LO loves baked zuccini sticks with the peeling off.

  • These are all really helpful suggestions.

We don't currently eat at the same time as him and I'm sort of trying to figure out how we could.  LO and I don't get home until nearly 7.  By the time DH and I eat, it's usually after 8.

First I started making LO's purees chunkier. Then we started with soft solids like bananas. I also would spread some applesauce on toast and he would basically suck the sauce off and chew little pieces of bread. Another good transition is to add just a tiny bit of pastina or the little ABC pastas to LO's puree. It helps to add more texture.

  • Please also remever food before 1 years old is only for practice and fun. There is no set amount NEEDed or required. Don't presure yourself that LO isn't eating enough, or anything along those lines.

I needed to hear this! It's really been stressing me out more than it should!
  • @Noethola‌ What temp and how long do you bake your zucchini strips?

  • @iwubrory I slice the skin off, cut into finger size matchsticks, use olive oil in the bottom of the pan then roast for 30-40 min at 350F. :)

  • @iowea1 Yep, let her figure it out. I know it isn't fun but the gagging really will teach her how to use her tongue and other oral muscles to manipulate food and keep herself from actually choking.
