How many times did your due date change?

I chart my menstrual cycle each month. I'm always on top of it! I found out I was pregnant in May & was told my due date was December 18th. Now they tell me my due date is January 16th. At my last ultrasound October 30, went to a 4d place (not my dr), I was 28w6d & the lady said I was measuring 31 weeks. Well if I go off of that, I would be 32 weeks today instead of 30 weeks or if I go by my original due date I would be 34 weeks today. She also said the baby weighed 3.8 lbs. at 28w6d the baby should roughly weigh 2-2.5 lbs. so I am going insane on what to believe I am!!! Lol

  • Only once. It changed from using my LMP to my dating u/s. Earlier u/s are always the  most accurate, you shouldn't be changing your due date based on whether you baby is measuring ahead or behind at this point, as all babies grow at different rates.

  • My due date never changed with my daughter and has not changed this time.  I was trying to get pregnant both times and always had pretty exact dates.  My daughter came before her due date but it never was changed.
  • Mine has never changed.

Sometimes the baby is measuring ahead and sometimes he's a little behind but that doesn't change my EDD. Even if I wasn't 100% sure of the conception date (IVF) up to 2 weeks variation isn't enough to change an EDD, at least according to my
    doctors.

The only time an EDD really changes is very early in the pregnancy and that usually happens when someone has a longer than average cycle and ovulation occurs much later than CD14.

  • Mine changed by 3 days from measuring by my LMP vs. my first ultrasound, which was around 9 weeks. The earliest ultrasounds are the most accurate in dating the pregnancy. Think of it this way - if you have a seed for a plant (like a pumpkin seed), they're all roughly the same size when they're really small. But then as the pumpkins grow, some are large and some are small, but they're all within the range of normal. So you may have a big or small baby, but the later you go in a pregnancy, the less accurate the size will be in determining the due date. Some people have 6 lb babies at 40 weeks, and some people have 10 lb babies at 40 weeks. My doctor said around 20 weeks, it's +/- a week, and around 3rd trimester, it's +/- two weeks. So just because you're "measuring ahead" doesn't mean that your EDD should change.
  • Yeah I'm looking at your OP again and I'm wondering if you either misunderstood or someone gave you some bad information regarding the December due date. All of your other information makes sense - finding out in May, due date of 1/16, being 30 weeks today. I found out I was pregnant on May 7th, I'm due 1/18 and I'll be 30 weeks on Sunday.

Like PP said, you don't change the due date based on growth at later ultrasounds.

  • I would normally say go by the date they first gave you, but December 18 seems very early to me if you found out you were pregnant in May (unless you were already 7-8 weeks pregnant when you found out, which I'm guessing you weren't if you were charting).  I found out I was pregnant on May 9 and I was exactly 4 weeks, and my due date is January 17- I will be 30 weeks tomorrow.
  • Mine has never changed. As PP mentioned it should be estimated based on an early ultrasound not later ones. As the baby gets bigger, the ultrasounds are inaccurate

  • agree with pp's and echo that a four week difference seems crazy to me too. Was it the doctor that switched the date on you or are you switching the date based upon the U/S? If doctor changed it, thats weird and I would call to discuss with doc to make sure you are both on same page in case you misunderstood.
  • Mine hasn't changed. I found out when I was 2 months though (in June.) I had to have an early ultrasound to determine how far I was because my last period was January.
I'm due Jan 26, and every ultrasound since have been consistent with that date.

  • With my first pregnancy, my due date never changed. With this pregnancy, my due date was moved up two weeks from my original EDD at a 16 week ultrasound. This is largely due to the fact that didn't have an LMP to go off of because I was breastfeeding. Also, the MW that did my first dating ultrasound(not my current MW), admittedly said she was not good at ultrasounds and dating, so there's that.

Anyways, I agree with PP, to me it sounds like you may just be measuring ahead? The size of the baby does not typically change the due date at this point in pregnancy, since all babies grow at different rates.

  • Mine has never changed. But I conceived with fertility meds and have photographic evidence of my exact ovulation date. Baby has always measured ahead in height (no one was surprised, though, I'm 6' and DH is 6'1"), but it doesn't change my d-day. Early ultrasound dating is usually the best way to go. After that there is a ton of normal variation.

mine hasn't officially changed at all.  i had initially estimated it to be january 20, but in reality there were some outside factors interfering with my chart, and that date was based on the end of the 5-day window during which i could have ovulated.  my OB simply recorded january 14 based on my LMP (which was a m/c, actually) and ordered a dating u/s to confirm (because of the m/c).  i would have been 8w2d based on LMP on the day of my u/s, and bean measured 7w6d, so they kept january 14 because i guess it's office policy to not adjust an EDD unless it's off by a week or more.  they also don't really view an EDD as the magical line between "not due yet" and "overdue", but consider the week before and following the EDD to be the "estimated delivery window" or something like that.

  • @mmur76‌ Oh hey twin. I found out and am due on the exact same dates.
  • My EDD never changed but I found out pretty early that I was pregnant, on Mother's Day. I also had an u/s at 6 weeks that helped confirm how far along I was.
When my husband and I moved, the new doc asked what my EDD was, and didn't even blink an eye or say anything differently during any of his u/s checks.

Ok, here is what I think happened. I think when the doctor first gave you the December due date, they may have been going by your last menstrual period. You said you charted each cycle. Did you have longer than "average" cycles? (Do you have an old chart you could post a link of? I'm kind of a charting geek.)

Then, based on your early ultrasound, they set the January 16th date, which I'm betting is your "real" due date.

The 3d ultrasound place didn't change your due date-- they just informed you that you're growing a big baby! I am, too. At 28w1d, my baby was 3 lbs 8 oz and measuring at 31ish weeks. No biggie-- my older daughter was born at 9 lbs 2 oz, so it's not a surprise that baby is measuring on the large size. That doesn't change your due date one bit.

All that to say, I'm willing to bet that Jan. 16 is your correct due date, and I'm betting it was set based on your 1st ultrasound, as it should have been.

ETA: But ask your OB at your next appointment so you can get some clarification. I wouldn't even mention the 3D place. I'd just ask why they changed your EDD from December to January. My money is on the difference between LMP and 1st ultrasound.

My doctor told me she wouldn't change my due date from LMP unless it was 10 days or more when I had a dating ultrasound done. I didn't have one with my first. I did with my second and they moved it 10 days later. This time it didn't change either.
Eta I measured ahead with each pregnancy. But didn't deliver early.

I changed mine, by 2 days. But that was because I knew when I ovulated... so sometimes the OB humors me, and sometimes they stick with 2 days later based on LMP. Really doesnt change from u/s except early on, dating u/s if your calculations might be off. This late in the game, probably means you are just having a bigger baby. Did you get your glucose check yet? My uterus measures over 36 weeks and I am having twins.... we don't change due dates for that. Go with the EDD your OB established early. Not the mall ultrasound place....

  • My due date has not changed. My early ultrasound matched up with my LMP. After that lots of variables can impact baby's size, but in most cases it won't change how far along they believe you are and unless there are issues shouldn't change your EDD.

I could hold you for a million years to make you feel my love.
  • When I first found out I my date was January 10 based on my last period. But 3 days later, when I had my ultrasound my due date changed by two weeks. My doctor has stuck with the first ultrasound date. Altough evey time I go to the doctor and my measure me I am always a week ahead but same due date.
  • Mine was officially changed once; they bumped it forward by 9 days based on 12 week ultrasound measurements. I know I ovulated on CD12 so it is technically impossible.... but according to guidelines they still have to change it.
    DD#1 (6), DD#2 (4), DD#3 (0)
  • My due date only changed one time, I found out I was about 5 weeks May 24th. I'm 29 weeks and a day. My due date is January 23rd.

Once with this pregnancy and never with my previous 3 pregnancies.  I didn't have a 1st tri ultrasound and we went off my LMP, well, I was on BC and I KNOW when I was late taking the pill one day (we were traveling and I was late ~12hrs).  My due date was moved up 7 days because the date I was late corresponds with the 3 ultrasounds I've had since then (2 in 2nd tri and 1 in 3rd due to placenta previa).
