Speaking of Santa

The UOs reminded me that I need to start thinking about this. I know we talked about it last year, but L sucked most of the IQ points right out of me and I can't remember the good advice I got. Anyway, so I don't want to teach my boys that there's a man in a red suit bringing them presents. I also don't want them to run around telling their cousins and friends that there is no Santa. How do you accomplish both with kids who are too young to "get" that people have different beliefs?

Re: Speaking of Santa

  • I like elf on the shelf. We got one. R liked looking for it every morning. But she was too young to get the whole concept, so I may or may not do the whole "he's spying on you" thing. It may be more of a fun Christmas decoration that hides in fun places. Maybe I'll even put a "spirit of giving" spin on it and we can take him to help deliver toys for tots or volunteer or something.

  • I had pinned this a few years ago and thought it was a cool way to explain Santa to a young kid.

  • Since we're an atheist/Pagan household, we're planning on telling our LO that Santa is something that some people believe in and some people don't, and that he can make up his own mind as to if he believes in Santa or not.
As he's only 15 months old, I suspect we've got at least one more year until it becomes an issue.
  • I'm totally dreading having to deal with the Santa conversation this year. DH and i are not on the same page with it.
  • Agree with MK. I believed wholeheartedly in Santa. And then I found out he wasn't real....and I'm alive and have no scars regarding Christmas.

  • We did want to have the kids say we lied to them for so many years, but don't want them calling out every guy in a santa suit as being an impostor. What we do is treat santa like any other character like princesses or pirates. They are fun to go along with, but when they see the character, they know it's just someone in a costume. That also helped them be okay with the giant mouse at Chuck e Cheese.

We do celebrate Saint Nicholas day earlier in the month. My kids know that we put out the gifts in the shoes, but that they resemble what Saint Nicholas did many years ago.
  • Santa brings my girls a doll & fills their stocking with stuff like toothbrushes, lifesavers & oranges. Any other presents come from me & MH. I'm hoping to teach them that big or more expensive presents come from hard work & saving & not magic. We hope to take them to Santa's village in Lapland (northern Finland) in the next few years, so I'd like them to believe in the magic until then. My ILs live in Finland, so we wouldn't be making a special trip just for Santa.
  • I'm pro Santa and anti elf on the shelf :)
