Did things you "need" for baby change?

I know we had a discussion a week or so ago about favorite baby items, so I'm curious:

What are some items that you were told you wouldn't need or you did think you'd need, but you ended up buying?

Or vive-versa

What are some items you were desperate to have or were highly recommended to you, that you haven't used?

For us, I never thought I'd use a crib bumper. With all the SIDS talk and such I just decided to not use one. But I recently went and bought a mesh crib bumper because LO is so squirmy and, several times already, has had a leg or arm between the bars! And something I was told we have to have was a RnP. But we've used it maybe twice, and DD could care less about it.

I second the RNP. I didn't register for one but my friend bought one because she said I needed it. Never opened it, I didn't want to worry about transitioning out of it later. Also a ton of people told me I needed a diaper genie, we just use the regular trash can and that's working fine.
I agree with the diaper genie. My sister insisted on one but we never got one. We just use the trash too, but I did buy some scented baggies (They're like $3 for a pack of 60 bags or something) to send to daycare and for on the road.

  • I did not end up needing my swaddles but I know I am in a serious minority there. I also barely use receiving blankets. But we are in FL and it is just now sort of cooling off so that may change.

We did end up getting a RNP which was awesome for us. I was told we did not need swing and bouncy seat both but we do have them and use them equally. Other things we have added have been a noise/sound machine, audio monitor, and a cool mist humidifier.
  • My "needs" changed from my first baby. I used swaddlers and the Boppy a lot with DD1, and barely any this time. My sister told me not to bother with a changing table so we didn't get one until a few weeks before this LO was born and I wish I got gotten one when DD1 was a baby.
oh this! Everyone told me I wouldn't use a changing table, but DH and I really wanted one attached to the crib, so that's what we got. And it's VERY rare if we don't change her there. We use it for changes and to dress her every day.

  • A swing! I know so many babies love theirs but DS is the odd one out I guess. He just now started tolerating sitting in it for 5-10 minutes but only if it's off.

Another one is the bumbo (although that may change). He loves trying to sit up by himself, has great head control etc but hates the bumbo. I know a lot of babies love their bumbo and swing so we will save them for down the road...
  • My aunt swore by the RNP because my cousin was a terrible sleeper and had bad reflux. We didn't have those issues, but DS is a bad daytime napper so we though, what the hell. Thank god we god it for cheap because DS hates it.

My daughter hated the swing! So much so that I didn't want to buy one for DS but my SIL had a baby last year and had a small one that she wanted to give to us so I took it. Wouldn't you know it that my son loves the swing. Babies really are different.

  • I wouldn't have survived without the arms reach co-sleeper. DD would only sleep on us or in our bed... which meant I didn't get any sleep. We got the cosleeper when she was a few weeks old and has been STTN in it for two months now. I'm sad that she's almost outgrown it and we'll have to start using the crib.
  • Didn't get a boppy till 2 days after LO arrived and still use it a lot. A&A bamboo swaddling blankets were a lifesaver for the hot summer!
And NBR but I have never appreciated our kurig like I do now, I use to think it was a waste to buy coffee for it (we got it as a gift so that was a plus).

  • I was told I would need a RnP, but we have survived without one. Also told we needed a Bumbo and Exersaucer. Glad we didn't get them because LO shouldn't be in them because of her hips.

I love our Arms Reach Co-sleeper! I'm also sad that DD is almost too big for it.

  • I second the swaddles and newborn clothing. My daughter was too big for them when she was born and always hated to be swaddled.
I loved our pnp newborn napper attachment. The first few weeks she lived in it during the day.
I second the mesh crib liner. We returned ours but may need to go back and get one now that I see she may need it.
Our biggest regret was going for the fancy monitor. It worked awful...ww returned it and bought a much cheapee one. Guess what? Can still hear and see her fine...

We didn't need the swaddles either. He hated it from day 1.

I had about 10 receiving blankets when DS was born and now have about 30. I use them like crazy!

I didn't think the swing would be as useful as it was. It's been a life saver!!

I forgot NB size clothing. Shouldn't have wasted my money. At 8 lbs 9 oz. and 22.5 inches long there was no point.

I'm the opposite. Both H and I were huge babies, so I was convinced I wouldn't need NB clothes for very long. Wrong. This girl can still wear some NB items at 12 weeks.
  • We weren't going to get a changing table but mil bought for us. Love it - it is actually where lo smiled at me for the first time. Also wasn't going to get wipe warmer but again mil bought for us - love it! It's cold in New England and the warm wipes are much better for motn changes! I gues mil knows best....

My little guy is still wearing newborn size at 11 weeks. My daughter grew out of them quickly, so I figured we didn't need many, I was wrong. My daughter loved the swing. He can take it or leave it, he doesn't enjoy much I don't get to put him down very often(he's much needier/more clingy than dd was) so i feel like a lot of my things just take up room.
  • This might not apply to 99% of people, but in case anyone has a preemie next time:

As soon as we knew we were delivering 9 weeks early, my MIL went out and bought a ton of cute preemie clothes (basically anything she could find) and he wore exactly NONE of it.  We didn't bother with clothes while he was in the NICU - they just swaddled him all the time.  And we came home with a chest monitor that he wears around his ribcage that made it impossible to get the preemie clothes on over it.

  • Things we got and never used: RNP, swaddlers, sound machines (2), pacifiers.

Things I love: Keekaroo peanut changing pad (it's on a chest of drawers that functions as our changing table), DropCam, A&A blankets, the simple wooden Plan mobile w mirror on the crib.

We received a crib bumper that I returned because of all of the sids talk but am purchasing a mesh one for transition to crib. Also LO doesn't care for rock and play; he's maybe used it 2-3 times for all of 10 minutes.

  • So glad I didn't get a RNP. Baby has been in his crib since week 2 and naps pretty much anywhere.

Honestly we kept things pretty minimal in our purchases and have used everything. Love our click and go stroller. We ended up needing lots of newborn clothes since I was induced 3 weeks early.

I don't love baby wearing so the sling and carrier we were gifted aren't the most useful. But they still come in handy sometimes.

This!! So many people said not to get a changing table, but when my mom was visiting about 4 weeks after LO was born she convinced me to get one and I am so glad we did!  Changing him is so much easier, and he loves to just hang out on the table!  Often times when he is fussy, I'll just put him on the table and he'll chill out, looking around, while I talk or read or sing to him....just last night he had a "First" on the table, his first time holding a rattle!  So glad we got it.
