My LO outgrew it by himself. He looooved it until he was 11 months or so. He would thrash and scream like I was murdering him if I tried to put him to bed without it. Then one day he just decided he didn't need it anymore. He spit it out, and never took it again. No idea what happened.
IMO, 12 months-2.5 years and they should only use the paci at bed/naptime. Then past 2.5 it starts getting weird.
LO only has it at bedtime, and I plan on it being gone by 2. As pp said, I think she may outgrow it on her own. She can fall asleep without it, she just prefers to have it.
I just took DD1 away about 2 months ago at 2.5. I know she had it way too long but I wasn't willing to give up her sleep when DD 2 was a teething mess up several times a night. DD2 has it for naps, bedtimes, and long car rides and will probably have it until 2-2.5 yrs old too. Both my girls love their paci.
I picked between 1 & 2. DD have hers up by 5 months but I often wish she still used it. We only used it when putting her to sleep and car rides. It would still be nice to have at night time.
She still loves it. She never started liking it until about 9 months and now I have no idea how we'll take it away. We want to start weaning her from it soon, but not until after our plane ride in a few weeks.. haha.
We only really use it at bedtime, naptime, and car rides. That's all we really used it for since she was about 6 months and it works for us. She can go to sleep without it, but it seems to still settle her better than anything else so we'll keep it for a while. I think she'll grow out of it on her own, but if she doesn't we will start to wean around 2.
DS gave up his pacifier on his own around 6 months. Like @Af1004 sometimes I wish he would still take it. (Like last night when he wanted to nurse all night long, because he is teething again)
We didn't take them away, he just kinda stopped using them gradually. It was weird because it just sort of happened and I didn't really notice until he hadn't used one on weeks. It was around 8 or 9 months, maybe? Or a little earlier than that? I can't remember.
