3rd Trimester

35 weeks and breech

Hello, so I'm pregnant with my first baby and today at 35 weeks by ultrasound i found out my baby is breech, also i find my liquor low, not oligohydramnious but I'm just above the boarder, so now I'm worried and confused, they are telling me that the baby probably won't turn and i should start thinking c section, i was hoping to deliver vaginally :(
Anyone had a similar problem and delivered vaginally
I'm so worried and confused :((

Re: 35 weeks and breech

  • You've still got time for baby to turn. Hopefully he/she will cooperate. Best wishes.

  • I've never had to turn a baby, but I will try all these tips if my baby is breech.  Right now, baby is transverse and I hope he drops!  I wonder if we will feel it when the baby drops?

OP, definitely do the exercises and techniques on Spinningbabies. You can always look into other therapies like Webster technique and moxibustion. The majority of babies are vertex by 37 weeks. There's still time, but this is the time to try to encourage baby into the vertex position.

While vaginal breech (frank and complete) is possible, not many providers are trained or skilled in attending vaginal breech birth. It really comes down to the skill of the practitioner. My midwife is skilled in attending breech births, and has attended breech births in the past. Ultimately, it has to be something you and your provider are comfortable with.

  • My most recent baby was breech the WHOLE time. Did they mention trying a version? We tried a version to turn her. It didn't work, but it helped me feel better about having tried and I personally did not find it to be painful, as some say. This is a more difficult situation to be in with your first baby, but since it was my third and I already had two vaginal deliveries, I was FINE w/ the C-section. I actually had an awesome experience. Went super well and I had an easier recovery than with my vaginal births. I had kind of tough vaginal births so it was nice not being totally exhausted when baby arrived.

There is definitely still time for your baby to turn. But if he/she doesn't, I know it's hard with a first baby, but it's not the end of the world. Again, I loved my C-section experience. Good luck.

All of this except it was my 1st that was breech, and I knew she was breech from about 33w onward, and my doc said that people actually overstate how frequent babies realistically flip so late in the game. So I had enough time to do research and get ready mentally. My version was NBD (not successful due to fluid levels and position) and I loved my CS experience. It is not the end of the world like some people say...
  • My second was transverse until 38 weeks. Around 32 weeks I started seeing a chiro 3x a week who specialized in the Webster's technique. Also did the spinning babies moves and lots of swimming. Good luck!

  • There is still time, so don't get down! But there are a lot of things you can do to help.

    1) call all of the chiropractors in your area and ask if they have experience in turning breech babies late in pregnancy. I have two in my area that are known to be very good at this. You can also consult with a midwife who has experience in turning breech babies.

    2) Read into "spinning babies" and practice.

    3) watch your body position and think a lot about how gravity can affect your baby's position. Staying upright and leaning forward will help the weight of the baby fall where it should. I don't know this for sure but my midwife told me that in the 3rd trimester you need to focus on not slouching or laying on your back. Don't sit back in chairs or allow your hips to be above your pelvis. You want to use the weight of the head and spine to turn your baby into the right position. So instead of sitting in a comfy couch each night where you sink in, try sitting on a birth ball. Swaying on all fours and tailor sitting is also good. My midwife said she sees way more breech babies in mothers who haven't walked enough during pregnancy or have office jobs where they sit a lot, but it can happen to anyone. I've also heard not to do deep squats and things that will widen your pelvis and have the baby's  bum settle lower into the birth canal.

I don't know that much but that is all I have been told. I'm 27 weeks and baby is transverse so I'm hoping for head down in a few weeks. Read into some of this and see if any of it helps. Just do the most you can so in the end if LO is still breech you know you didn't leave any stones unturned. I have heard of babies turning all the way up to delivery and breech does not automatically mean a cesarean. My midwife has caught several healthy breech babies!

  • My two previous pregnancies both babies were breech until about 38 weeks.  I used a bags of frozen peas on the top of my belly - it makes the baby go down to the warmth.  Also, use a flashlight towards the bottom of your belly - they move towards the light... :)   It helped with those two -  I will start doing these same steps again for this baby - now 33+ weeks - in the next few weeks if he hasn't moved down on his own.  Good luck!!!

  • OP, this baby was breech at 34 weeks. I had a chiro adjustment that week and the following week. She's been vertex, between LOA/OA/ROA for a week now. I also do pelvic tilts and inversions daily. Once she was head down I started sitting on the birth ball and laying on my side exclusively to avoid malpositioning and help her descend/engage.

  • All great advice above, I would try whatever you feel comfortable with to get the baby to flip.  Also, start researching a family centered C-section and know all of your options to make it an optimal experience if you do end up needing one.  Good luck to you I hope they flip!

  • My first daughter turned breech at 38 weeks, 3 days.  Turns out she flipped back to the head-down position at 38 weeks, 4 days and broke my water in the process :-)  I basically inverted myself using the spinning babies techniques for several hours when I realized she was breech and it did the trick.  I strongly endorse the inversion techniques as a result :-)  Best of luck and don't give up hope…there are things you can do to help baby flip!

  • Just checking in on you, has your baby turned head down yet?  What does your OB say?
