NBR: Home vs. Salon Hair Color

I've reached the point where I've run out of creative ways to disguise my increasing number of wild grey hairs. If you choose to color your mane, how do you prefer to do it? Bonus points if you specify highlights, lowlights, or overall color.

  • I've never colored my hair but as far as other treatments I'm kinda in the all of the above camp I've relaxed my hair myself, someone close to me has done it and I go to the salon. I usually go to the salon though. I'm going to tell you what my hair stylist said to me the last time I attempted to relax my hair on my own: "I'm a beautician and I still have someone do stuff like that for me".

I don't color my hair because I'm a natural red head and I'm afraid I'll ruin it forever. If I did, though, I would get it done professionally in a salon, not an "at home" stylist.
  • I haven't dyed my hair in years, I pluck my silvers. Prior to my salon boycott I would have it done professionally but when I was in high school my mom would box dye it for me and she did her own. I don't think it's too difficult to DIY, especially if you are close to your natural color.
  • Never colored my hair, but would go to a salon if I did.

  • I get my hair colored in a salon. My stylist is a good friend from high school so I trust her when she says boxed dyes are one of the worst things you can do to your hair. I know she's not just trying to get money out of me. ;)

  • I used to dye my own hair when I was younger but screwed up the colour often. Now I have highlights done professionally every six months and it looks much better!
  • Suppose I should've done SS, since my SIL is a cosmetologist, but I have her do it for me.

I haven't colored my hair in over a year- trying to go all natural (until the grays kick in) but I always let the pros do it; I do a horrible job myself. And I prefer highlights.
  • My mom was doing mine once I started getting gray but it was fading quickly so I've been going to my friend at a salon for the past year. I try to stretch it 8 weeks but really should go every 6.

I color my hair at home but if I had the extra money I would prefer to go to the salon.

  • I suggest going to a salon. I get highlights and low lights and some all over color.

However if you buy a box dye and I doesn't work out you can still get it color corrected- if it DOES work out you saved yourself some cash. I only recommend doing at home color of its all over.

If you want highlights or low lights def go to a salon.

  • SS I guess. Before LO I was going to the salon for highlights.  Now that I'm a SAHM I feel guilty spending the $ and asking DH to watch him on top of it.  So I found a professional who does hair out of her basement 2 days a week for extra cash.  So I can bring LO and she charges less than the salon, though its still not cheap.  She uses all professional products, has the whole set up with chair and shampoo bowl, etc.

@LalaMama81‌ thanks for your perspective. I know I still need to make that transition in my mind about "our money." I like to be a good steward of our income, so I'm always looking for new ways to cut costs. It's also the (former) teacher in me.

And yes, I definitely need to give DH more opportunities to parent without me there. Especially considering the past few times I've left them together there is some sort of 'catastrophe' that happens while I'm away. Not involving LO, but simply because DH is rendered otherwise useless when tasked with caring for our child. He'll have to work on that, but in the meantime it makes me look pretty good when I can make it look so effortless;)

ETA, sorry for hijacking your thread OP!

I often do my own but I have a license and can get professional color. Even highlights. But sometimes I have another hair stylist do it, it's so much easier! We are professionals for a reason, and we use much better products and know way more than you do. If you stay close to your own color just to refresh your ends, I say go ahead and save your money. If you are covering grey you're likely to get weird results. NEVER lighten your hair with box color. Color doesn't lift color and you'll probably wind up with orange hair. If it hasn't happened you are very lucky, in all the ten years I had been doing hair, at least one client a day comes in to have their color fixed! Not to sound condescending, but there's quality in professional products that others don't have, due to better research and development.

  • I've been with my hairdresser longer than DH ; )

    Me too. :)
  • Definitely leave it to the professionals...but since having my LO i tend to just get my hair cut and figure until I go grey I should maybe just save my money and go natural :)
  • I have a friend who does mine, but the John Frieda mousse worked well for me before she started doing it. I always bought two boxes, separated in four sections and clolored. I had the second box, I have long hair medium thickness.
  • I'm a honey blonde with low and highlights, far from my natural hair color which is very dark blonde. Yikes! So, no way I would attempt it but I pay way too much and I have to go every 6-8 weeks to upkeep. My mom and Grandma used to dye each other's hair but it doesn't have dimension and looked very strawberry and brassy to me. Sounds awful, but no thanks! To the salon I go! My dream would be to find someone affordable tho but my hair lady uses syran wrap and does different techniques to keep it fresh. ;)
