Trouble TTC a Sibling

If you had trouble previous to TTTCAS

Lurker here with a question. I haven't had much luck looking for guidelines for what to do if you had trouble before and then want to have another baby so I hope it is ok if I ask you here.

If you were under the care of an RE to have a baby prior to the one you are TTC now, did you go straight back to the RE this time? Or did you try on your own first?

I'm thinking of starting to try for a sibling early next year and I wrote to my RE earlier this week to ask for her advice in terms of TTC on our own vs. going straight back to her for help. Both of my losses and subsequent infertility (technically secondary infertility since the lost pregnancies came first) were considered unexplained. I fully expected her to tell me to try for a year or until I turn 35 (whichever is sooner) and then come back to redo testing. She said to try on our own starting now for 3-4 months until DS is 18 months old and then to come back for letrizole (femara) and progesterone, which was the protocol that luckily resulted in DS. Her rationale was that once I'd be 18 months pp, she'd be comfortable being a little more "aggressive".

Talk me through your and/or your RE's thinking in terms of trying on your own vs. going back to treatments.

Re: If you had trouble previous to TTTCAS

  • Oh hai! Missed you, lady!

Glad to see you trying again. Wasn't it just yesterday we were on TTCAL?? Time flies!

We're kind of an odd situation since we got pregnancy naturally while under the care of an RE. It's a bit of a running joke with her since it happened twice. She said we could try on our own from 3 months PP but she wanted to wait until 9 months PP before doing our FET. After that who knows.

I think using the same protocol that worked before makes sense to me, but it depends if mentally you're ready for all that. Charting and trying on your own is one thing but I know for me we just weren't ready at 9 months for the shots and pills and ultrasounds and all that so we're just messing around (pun intended) until we feel ready to get more aggressive.

Good luck and I hope you hang around and keep us up to date!

  • We went right back once my period returned. But I'm also 39, so no time to mess around. :) And I have PCOS. I have a couple friends who were unexplained and got pregnant easily after the first one. 3-4 months of trying seems reasonable.
    *** Child & current pregnancy mentioned ***
    Me - 41 (PCOS), Hubby - 43 (healthy)
7/2013 - Sweet baby girl born (Clomid + TI)
    3/2014 - TTC #2, return to RE 7/2014
12/2015: IVF #1 transferred two great looking embryos - BFP!
First ultrasound: TWO beautiful little heartbeats!!
Harmony: negative; level 2: babies look great and are boy/girl! :)
  • We were trying for 4 months before I called, and when I called they told me to try for a few months then come in.  When I explained that this was the 4th month, they told me to come in next week.
  • Thank you all. It's really helpful to know the advice I received wasn't all that unexpected after all. I hope you are each well on your way to your next babies very soon!

Hi Boots! Miss you too, though I lurk frequently on PAL so I've loved seeing Baby Boots photos. He's so darn cute and he's only a few weeks younger than my DS so it's extra fun. :) Thanks for your perspective on this too. Im not quite ready to try yet, and I'm terrified of another heartbreaking marathon the second time around but ultimately I do want one more. Not a day goes by that I don't thank my lucky stars to have DS. I'm rooting for you, lady!

  • We called our ob and asked what the protocol. He was amazingly proactive and told us to meet with a re right away. He said why wait. I waited about 6 months of trying by ourselves with opk and ti. And then made an appointment to see the re. She also was very ok with us going on meds and actually we had a second hsg bc I had my appendix out and there's always a chance for Damage after surgery and insurance covered it.
