Birth Plan for Hospital Delivery??

Who has used one & did the hospital staff adhere to it at all? We unfortunately don't have a birthing center here & will have to deliver at the local hospital.  We have quite a few labor & delivery nurses who feel they know what's best & the patient should just go with whatever they decide even though our midwife is wonderful & couldn't be better at patient care.

Is this your first (sorry if you have a ticker; I'm on mobile and can't see)? How do you know that the L&D nurses are pushy? I don't see why your midwife would allow that. Or are you just upset and worried because you wanted to give birth at a birthing center?

I had a hospital birth and had the best experience with my L&D nurse. She was kind, caring, informative. She gave me lots of heads up about upcoming procedures and never pressured me into anything. I hope that you have a similar experience with your nurse/nurses!

  • I looked through the sample birth plan on TB the other night and it was a little too much for me - I had no idea in what position I want to labor as I have never gone through this before. We have our class at the hospital tomorrow so I'm hoping I'll get some more info then and maybe be able to make more decisions at that point.

    Pregnancy Ticker

  • @bookitbo Sorry I forgot to include that.  This is my 3rd boy.  Both other boys delivered here but they were textbook pregnancies & deliveries.

We've had issues with this pregnancy so have had to go up to the hospital several times.  Long story but unfortunately a more reliable hospital is too far from where we live & will have to deliver here.  There are some great nurses but for the most part there are several who were pushy & really made a life threatening issue much worse until we were transferred to a large city for emergency surgery.  I've healed & have been told we can have a regular vaginal birth.  I'd prefer to have our midwife & her doctor close by for delivery instead of just checking in to the hospital that helped us when we were sick a 120 miles away.  Then my older boys can be with us as long as possible while we are in the first stages of labor.

  • I had the best experience with my L&D nurses. They were amazing. I did have a "birth plan", but I think I actually titled it "wish list", and it was more of a guide for a discussion between me and my OB before delivery and then it was something I had just for me so I knew going in what I wanted/hoped for.

It was never an issue. Nurses asked before we did anything. I was always informed of my options in a very matter of fact way and my wishes were honored. When things weren't going as hoped, I was spoken with and not "at".

Anyway, I'm off topic now, but I did have a hospital birth plan/wish list, and while not everything went how I wanted, I still had a good experience meaning I was treated with respect and my baby arrived safe and healthy. :)

  • I'm sorry you've had complications, that sounds really scary! I understand being too far away from a hospital, it certainly makes life more difficult.

    Congratulations on your little boy!

  • The best thing you can do with pushy L&D nurses is to educate yourself and trust your care provider.
