Pregnant after IF

Anyone going back on birth control?

The ladies on my BMB board are talking about this, a lot of them are getting an IUD.

I personally will not go back on birth control cuz of all the intervention needed to conceive this LO.   I just don't think i would get pregnant easily on my own and if I do, then I'll have another one!

Anyone here who's considering birth control after this baby?

  • The only reason why maybe I would is to keep endo at bay...but I've heard it doesn't come back as aggressively after having a baby.  And honestly, I go crazy with BCPs - l've ended up in the hospital twice from panic attacks, and the nuva ring keeps giving me yeast infections.  So I probably will end up passing on that.

    Me 33, DH 37 -- TTC since Jan'12 -- Low AMH (0.78) & endo, SA w/ low motility
    IUI's 1-3 = BFN, IVF converted to IUI 4/13 = BFN
    IVF 1.2: 8R 6M 4F -- 2 blastocysts frozen, FET 8/15 = BFP!!

  • I'd only go back on it to regulate my PCOS, no prevent pregnancy.  But I've been told that many women post pregnancy never have PCOS symptons again, so if that's the case, there will be no pill for me!

    IVF #1 Oct 2013- cancelled
IVF #2 Mar 2014- success.... baby girl born 11/28/14
FET #1 Mar 2016- baby boy due 12/16/16

  • Only if someone puts a gun to my head. Once I had the metformin in the system to regulate my periods to a reasonable length and my hormone became somewhat stable, BCP was a nightmare. It made me nuts during period time. My SO asked me the second month I was on it if I was having some mental difficulties, did I need to talk to someone. We sat down and talked about what had changed. The only thing different was the BCP. So, no, no, no, no. We had 4 years of unproductive unprotected sex, I doubt it will be an issue.

    SAIF/PAIF Welcome

  • I'm going to speak with my OB after, but I'm pretty sure I won't. I have one tube and I didn't o prior to the salpingectomy from the side that still has the tube during IUIs. While the RE said there's a very slim chance the egg could be picked up by the opposite tube, they still said IVF would be my best chance. I guess I'll see whether my periods regulate or I even care if they do.

I will say my cousin went through multiple IVFs to get pregnant with her second child and didn't think she could get pregnant on her own. Low and behold she ended up with a surprise around the time baby #2 was 10 months old. :)

  • If I was having a single baby, I would not go back on BCP because a natural BFP would be welcomed. However, since I am pregnant with twins, I do plan on going back on BCP. I don't think adding a third child too soon would be a good idea for our family. Maybe in 5 years.

  • No BCP's here - my OB mentioned something about that would be our discussion when I come back 6 weeks after baby is born, but sometimes I think she forgets how hard it was to get where we are.  No way, would love a natural BFP, but I know that is unlikely.  What is more likely - a third round of IVF :(.  I would also like a refund as @AMShark has suggested!

  • I've thought about this a little and I'm undecided. Our dx was some borderline MFI things and high FSH so not sure if it's remotely possible without IVF or not (obviously it wasn't for this go round). BC was really nice for less painful periods and clearer skin. We do want more kids though so not sure yet what I'll do.

  • I'm the odd lady out. I will definitely be going back on. I have PCOS and actually feel better on bcp. We'd like to maybe have one more and we have 14 embies still on ice and really good IF coverage. Given my history of poor egg quality, I'd rather try with those good embryos from when I was 34 than risk getting pregnant on my own at 36 or 37, no matter how unlikely.

  • I will only use birth control if I end up with a c-section, and only to give my body appropriate time to heal before chancing conception. If I have an uncomplicated vaginal birth, we won't prevent again.

We actively want a second child, and ideally close together. In a perfect world, they'd be 2 years apart, but we all know how little control we infertiles have over that kind of family planning. So we won't prevent, and when my cycles start being regular again (hopefully before it around this child's first birthday) then we will start trying for good timing. If by his second birthday we haven't conceived (or maybe a bit before), we'll go back to the doctor.

Once we have two kids, DH will be getting the snip (his call).

I will be going back on bcp but my situation is different. This is my second LO and DH and i believe she will complete our family. Call me crazy but i am excited to close the ttc chapter of my life. That being said we have no intentions of doing a more perm type of birth control (aka, DH getting the snip). Just not for us.
I totally agree with this @Ducky719, so maybe we're both crazy!  This is also #2 for us and I'm 99.9% sure that our family will be complete.  Since this pregnancy happened naturally after 2 failed FETs and it isn't recommended that you get pregnant within a year after a CS, I'll be going on some sort of BC, just not sure what yet.

  • I actually was thinking about this last night what we are going to do. I do not want to get back on bcp because I'll be 41, I don't want my husband to get snipped because that's just permanent. We don't want anymore, mainly because of our age. Getting pregnant wasn't my problem it was that I kept getting pregnant with genetically abnormal babies. I also couldn't lose them on my own. I have to many medical problems that made all those pregnancies/mc very painful for me. I don't know what were going to do yet, but I'm scared to chance it so we may just use the fam method.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • We won't use any BC.  The only time we would is if we know we are done, and at that point I'm not sure what option we would do.

  • I had my babies already but I had to comment that while I was in the hospital a resident came in at 5am and tried to get me to take the depo shot before I left the hospital! I finally looked at her and asked her if she knew what it took for me to get pregnant this time, she did not. I think I can wait two weeks to at least talk to my own doctor. Stupid baby doctors...

  • My first response was why?! But then. I considered the pain I sometimes have w Endo and if there's a chance it could help I might take it. But honestly probably not for a few years. If we somehow fell pregnant in spite of mfi and Endo I'd feel like it was a miracle.
  • I have been thinking about this as well. My endo is pretty darn bad, and it is in my ovaries. When I'm off the pill I live in constant fear of big bad endometriomas destroying my ovaries. However, how freaking awesome would it be to get a natural BFP, from actual sex? That would just be amazing. I think I want at least one more child, but in an ideal world we might wait a bit. We also still have 4 frosties that also deserve a chance of becoming humans. Overall, I think this is tricky for me. If I didn't have endo, there would be no doubt that I would just stay of the pill (and use the good old Catholic pull-out method if we did not feel ready). I'm just happy that we have 24 more weeks of pregnancy (fingers crossed) and then some time of breastfeeding before we have to decide.
