It's getting to be the shopping season, so I thought it would be fun to do a toy post. Here goes:
1. What's a toy that you REALLY wanted as a kid, which your parents did not get you or did not allow you to have?
2. What's a toy that your kid(s) want that you are saying "no" to?
3. What's something you're already planning on getting your kid(s) this year?
High School English teacher and mom of 2 kids:
DD, born 9/06/00 -- 12th grade
DS, born 8/25/04 -- 7th grade
Re: Let's Talk Toys!
2. Leap pad - I am only saying no because we already have an Ipad. The 2 times DS flipped through the Kmart toy book, he said he wanted it. Ugh, not helpful because I want to get him something else.
3. I am hoping to get one of those Planes Fire Rescue planes. DS pointed to it while I was flipping through the walmart toy book.
1. I always wanted this little AM/FM radio that you wore as a necklace. I was so enamored that it was so "tiny" and I could wear it to school discretely. It probably sounded like crap. Anyway, my Mom would never order it from the Sears catalogue. Also, the year she handmade us Cabbage Patch Kids. Imagine our disappointment. Poor Mom, she was so ticked at us for not being excited, and had worked so hard on them.
2. DS keeps pointing at the $60 Wii games. I guess we'll have to suck it up and buy one. We have a Wii U but only the one game that came with it. When did games get so dang expensive?!
3. He is getting Angry Bird Transformers Telepods, and possibly a bike. He is pretty "meh" about the bike because he doesn't like to ride bikes, but we're going to invest in an expensive one that is easier for him to ride so it feels like it should be a gift. Fortunately DS is easy to please, if he gets a mountain of books and candy he'll be a happy camper. I'm asking family members to get him "experience" gifts, like science museum tickets, water park passes, etc.
2. I tried to say no to my ILs buying DS a Lego fire station. MIL asked me what I thought, and I said I would rather keep big Lego sets as a birthday gift. They bought him the police station in August for his birthday. But I think FIL basically promised DS that he would look for it. Sigh.
3. We are not going to buy many toys because ILs buy them a mountain of stuff, but I do plan to get DS a big set of Magna Tiles. I think I will get dress up clothes for DD. Or maybe some new play-kitchen stuff.
2. DS isn't asking for anything specific yet. So nothing I'm saying no to yet either.
3. SO wants to get DS a basketball hoop for inside his room. I'm not sold on that idea though. He is getting magna tiles (bought already).
2. I can't think of anything specific. He keeps picking out the huge expensive Lego sets, but doesn't really gravitate to anything I wouldn't want in the house.
3. He is getting a Kindle from Santa and from us, some K'Nex and Hexbugs sets.
1. I too wanted an easy bake oven & never got one. I also have a memory of wanting hungry hungry hippos...and I suspect my parents didnt know I wanted it b/c I dont know why they wouldnt have gotten that particular one. I did get a real CBK but also got a handmade one from a relative... it also makes me sad now to think of the things people spent time making & picking out... like when I got a care bear but it wasn't the 'one' I wanted or when I got a hermit crab but it had a weird shell compared to all my friends' hermit crabs and I started to cry. Sigh.
2. The lego sets that are aged too high...my 5 yr old can do the 6-12's ok but often will make some critical mistake along the way w/ a piece or two and it ends in breakdown and I have to go back & figure out where the 1 misplaced piece is...the problem is that the 5-12's are kind of limited and we already have a ton of vehicles which is what most of those seem to be, and the 6-12s are much more interesting for him. Argh.
3. Some lego sets for him, she hasnt started asking for much but I'm sure it'll be frozen/princess/art related.
2. My son wants a Nintendo DS. I said no because it's a bit expensive and we just got him a really expensive Nintendo Wii for his birthday in November.
3. We are getting him Wii games. The only surprise is I bought an Indiana Jones whip that plays music and sound effects on eBay for Xmas. He will love it!
1. I wanted a keyboard. A big one. I put it on my list every year for my Grandparents. I finally got a little one. It wasn't the big keyboard I wanted!
2. My daughter's are really into American Girl and my one daughter, which is 3, has asked for something that is $300! Yes, I said no.
3. I have already purchased them each an AG Doll, Accessories, doll beds, a doll trunk, etc. I am pretty much done Christmas shopping as we are going on vacation and that is part of their present.
