Frozen breast milk

I have about 70 ounces of frozen breast milk ranging from 10/1 to yesterday and I have seen so many different things about breastfeeding storage. Up until an hour ago, I had the up and up bags stored in the freezer in a coke box for convenient storage. Another website suggested putting the milk storage bags in a freezer bag to avoid freezer burn.

Did I just completely waste a bunch of good milk by not putting them in the freezer bags to begin with? I also didn't know that you're supposed to chill the milk before putting it the freezer.

I always put it straight in the freezer after putting it in the storage bags. It doesn't do anything to the milk. Both my kids drank it and are perfectly healthy. Don't worry mama. You didn't waste it.

  • Mine is just in the storage bags in the bottom drawer in my freezer. No freezer bags, and it goes right in there after pumping. So far, so good.

With my DD I had hundreds of ounces of milk going in at out of the freezer for 14 months in just storage bags and she drank it all just fine in a sippy cup....she never took a bottle but I dont think that was related
  • I've been putting mine directly into he freezer in regular milk storage bags. They've overrun my small freezer and I definitely need to get a better way to keep them organized lol.
  • I heard a great way to organize is to get a small gift bag and cut a slit in the bottom of one of the skinny sides, then stack up the bags of frozen milk. That way you're always pulling the oldest milk out first. I just started pumping for my freezer stash, but that's what I'm going to do.

  • Love the idea of a gift bag or 12 pack coke box. I got a storage box from a baby shower and it's already full (didn't hold that many bags and they don't stand up straight). I unfortunately don't have a large freezer so I've been looking for a better way to organize my milk!
  • Mine go from fridge to freezer storage rack to freezer bag. They only make it to the fridge first because I'm back at work and freezer bags because I've got about 300oz of milk frozen and my rack only holds 10 bags.

  • the freezer bags just add an extra bit of security but they're totally fine to freeze without the gallon bags. the bm bags are designed to help avoid freezer burn. Also I totally go straight to the freezer sometimes and have had no issues. Although I find it easier to just put all the milk from the day in one container in the fridge and then portion out into bags at the end of the day.

  • I took a breast feeding class and in the book they gave us it said the only time you are suppose to chill the milk in the fridge first is when you are adding it to an already frozen bag of milk. So if it's a new empty bag it can go right to the freezer.
I'm envious of you and your big stash of milk. I just can't seem to get a good routine down and always worry if I pump too much or too close to feeding I won't have enough for DS.

  • @bf43005‌ I was worried about this too and got a lot of anxiety that LO would wake up right after I pumped. However, I've been assured the milk keeps flowing and of course it does. Even if he nurses shortly after pumping, I'll just switch sides more frequently. He's seemed full! I try to pump 30 minutes to 1 hour after I nurse or I'll nurse him on one side and pump the other. I don't have a huge stash but it's helped build a small one.
  • I freeze the milk in our regular freezer first. Then, after I have 40 oz, I put the bags into a freezer bag and transfer it to our chest freezer in the basement. Just helps me with organization.
