Let's Talk Toys!

It's getting to be the shopping season, so I thought it would be fun to do a toy post.  Here goes:

1.   What's a toy that you REALLY wanted as a kid, which your parents did not get you or did not allow you to have?

2.   What's a toy that your kid(s) want that you are saying "no" to?

3.   What's something you're already planning on getting your kid(s) this year?

    1. Barbie dream house that I wanted for Christmas and they got me this wooden doll house where barbie was too big. Today, I think my parents could not afford it and they had my 2 other siblings to buy for.

    2. Leap pad - I am only saying no because we already have an Ipad. The 2 times DS flipped through the Kmart toy book, he said he wanted it. Ugh, not helpful because I want to get him something else.

    3. I am hoping to get one of those Planes Fire Rescue planes. DS pointed to it while I was flipping through the walmart toy book.

  • 1.  I too wanted the Barbie Dream House and an Easy Bake Oven but didn't get either.  When my daughter is old enough, she is getting that Easy Bake Oven whether she likes it or not!!

    2.  The only things they have asked for so far are the crappy toys they peddle during commericals on Nick, like the Snack-eze cups (my sister is getting them).  I haven't committed to anything yet so I might cave.

    3.  Already got my daughter a tea set.  I know they will be getting books.  Still trying to figure out everything else.

  • 1. I always wanted this little AM/FM radio that you wore as a necklace. I was so enamored that it was so "tiny" and I could wear it to school discretely. It probably sounded like crap. Anyway, my Mom would never order it from the Sears catalogue. Also, the year she handmade us Cabbage Patch Kids. Imagine our disappointment. Poor Mom, she was so ticked at us for not being excited, and had worked so hard on them.

    2. DS keeps pointing at the $60 Wii games. I guess we'll have to suck it up and buy one. We have a Wii U but only the one game that came with it. When did games get so dang expensive?!

    3. He is getting Angry Bird Transformers Telepods, and possibly a bike. He is pretty "meh" about the bike because he doesn't like to ride bikes, but we're going to invest in an expensive one that is easier for him to ride so it feels like it should be a gift. Fortunately DS is easy to please, if he gets a mountain of books and candy he'll be a happy camper. I'm asking family members to get him "experience" gifts, like science museum tickets, water park passes, etc.

  • 1. I can't remember a toy I really wanted that I didn't get.  We had so many toys, and my parents always went crazy buying stuff at Christmas.  I am sure there was some specific Cabbage Patch doll or something, but I don't dwell on it anymore :)

    2. I tried to say no to my ILs buying DS a Lego fire station.  MIL asked me what I thought, and I said I would rather keep big Lego sets as a birthday gift.  They bought him the police station in August for his birthday.  But I think FIL basically promised DS that he would look for it.  Sigh.

    3. We are not going to buy many toys because ILs buy them a mountain of stuff, but I do plan to get DS a big set of Magna Tiles.  I think I will get dress up clothes for DD.  Or maybe some new play-kitchen stuff.

  • 1. I always wanted a Lite Brite, but my mom probably didn't want to deal with all the tiny pieces, and she was anti-toys that needed batteries.

    2. DD1 saw a "ride-on unicorn" that I told her was never going to happen.

    3. Pretty sure I'm going to get them American Girl dolls.
  • 1. An easy bake oven!

    2. DS isn't asking for anything specific yet. So nothing I'm saying no to yet either.

    3. SO wants to get DS a basketball hoop for inside his room. I'm not sold on that idea though. He is getting magna tiles (bought already).

  • 1. I wanted a Snoopy Snow Cone Machine. It was on my list every year for years and years and I never got one. I also wanted a real Cabbage Patch Kid and never got one until after I'd outgrown them.

    2. I can't think of anything specific. He keeps picking out the huge expensive Lego sets, but doesn't really gravitate to anything I wouldn't want in the house.

    3. He is getting a Kindle from Santa and from us, some K'Nex and Hexbugs sets.
  • This is such a funny post ;)

    1. I too wanted an easy bake oven & never got one. I also have a memory of wanting hungry hungry hippos...and I suspect my parents didnt know I wanted it b/c I dont know why they wouldnt have gotten that particular one.  I did get a real CBK but also got a handmade one from a relative... it also makes me sad now to think of the things people spent time making & picking out... like when I got a care bear but it wasn't the 'one' I wanted or when I got a hermit crab but it had a weird shell compared to all my friends' hermit crabs  and I started to cry. Sigh.

    2. The lego sets that are aged too high...my 5 yr old can do the 6-12's ok but often will make some critical mistake along the way w/ a piece or two and it ends in breakdown and I have to go back & figure out where the 1 misplaced piece is...the problem is that the 5-12's are kind of limited and we already have a ton of vehicles which is what most of those seem to be, and the 6-12s are much more interesting for him. Argh.

    3. Some lego sets for him, she hasnt started asking for much but I'm sure it'll be frozen/princess/art related.
  • 1.  I, too, really wanted the Easy Bake Oven and was told I could use the real oven.  The Snoopy Snow Cone maker is another thing that seemed really attractive in the commercials.  Fortunately, some kids in my neighborhood got it and told me it was crap.  I was also obsessed with this toy called the Big Track, which was a "programmable" vehicle.  My DH found one for me at a yard sale several years ago, barely used.  Dreams can come true!

    2.  DS has wanted the Wii U for a while.  I play video games, and I'm probably going to buy a PS4 sometime in the next year.  The Wii U just doesn't have a single game that I feel is a "must play" game. He's got plenty of other devices on which to play video games without the Wii U.

    3.  We are getting a 4x8 tumbling/martial arts mat to have at home.  DS is a blue belt.  He needs to be able to practice throws.  DD and I started taking karate in the summer, and it will be good to have a mat as we progress.  DD is getting a laptop.  She's in high school; it's time. We are stumped for a big gift for DS.  I'm still considering getting that darn Wii U because we can't really think of anything else to get him.  I'd like to get him piano lessons, but he just started playing trumpet.  One instrument at a time is plenty.

  • 1. Easy bake oven. My mom wouldn't let me have one. She thought they weren't safe and thought we could just cook in the real oven. She would buy the mixes and help me bake it in the real oven. I'm sure the cakes didn't come out the same and I wanted to do it myself. :(

    2. My son wants a Nintendo DS. I said no because it's a bit expensive and we just got him a really expensive Nintendo Wii for his birthday in November.

    3. We are getting him Wii games. The only surprise is I bought an Indiana Jones whip that plays music and sound effects on eBay for Xmas. He will love it!

  • 1.  I wanted a keyboard.  A big one.  I put it on my list every year for my Grandparents.  I finally got a little one.  It wasn't the big keyboard I wanted!

    2.  My daughter's are really into American Girl and my one daughter, which is 3, has asked for something that is $300!  Yes, I said no.

    3. I have already purchased them each an AG Doll, Accessories, doll beds, a doll trunk, etc.  I am pretty much done Christmas shopping as we are going on vacation and that is part of their present.

I had one when I was a kid! And had fond memories of it so I bought one for DS last year. What a bust. Total piece of crap. DS loves snowcones though so I did eventually break down and bought a nice one from Bed Bath and Beyond that we actually get a lot of use from. I haul it out for all our neighborhood block parties and play dates.
