DIY/Crafty/Interior Design Saavy Mommas

I bought a bar from Salvation Army for $50 and want to give it a makeover and give it to my husband for Christmas.  I want to give it a Virginia Tech feel to it (read:  maroon and orange).  I plan to put some pictures of us at the football games along with some ticket stubs and other memoribilia for the bar top and then cover it with epoxy.  I think it would be nice to paint over the wood but I'm not what color(s).  I like the idea of a two tone bar (or more if it works).  I was thinking about maybe grey and maroon.  What are your ideas?

  • I would also keep the body gray, maybe do the door panels in maroon? I wonder if you could find orange handles or do the lip of the bar in orange. Also, I would put the pictures under a layer of glass instead of epoxy, I think it would be more durable and spill-resistant.

  • Chalk paint will be your best friend you won't have to sand anything and you can make it yourself!! Attached is the dresser my mom did for my sons room with chalk paint and she used espresso spray paint for the top and put an epoxy on it and it still looks amazing
  • What an awesome find!  I like the grey for the whole piece with accent of maroon.  Such a great idea.
  • @heatherbond06 That dresser is gorgeous! I've seen that people love chalk paint but wasn't really sure why. So does that mean you don't have to sand OR put any sort of primer on it? How do you like the epoxy top? Are you able to wipe it off with cleaners?  Do you know what kind of epoxy she used?

  • Oh and epoxy resin is the tits, use high gloss and do a bunch of coats and you can pretty much treat it like glass. Everything wipes right off.

You were holding out on me, Dani!  Look at those gorgeous pieces of furniture!  Do you think it would work with a darker gray color?  Also, just fly to VA and help me.  I need my bar to look as good as the pieces you did!

I'm guessing I can get plaster of paris at the hardware store?

Chalk paint is amazing because you don't sand or prime, and it's wonderful for doing distressing.

Don't run out and buy some $50 a can (looking at you, Annie Sloan) paint. You can just as easily make your own! I've done this dozens of times. Look for recipes online, or mix equal parts paint and plaster of Paris for the same exact look at 1/50th the cost. Ha! Here's some pieces I painted with home made chalk paint. Save your money!
I love every single piece you have done they are gorgeous!!

I haven't tried to wipe off with a cleaner I would have to ask my mom about that one and I will let you know what kind she used!! But yes you don't need to sand or prime either
  • Ditto Dani on the homemade chalk paint. That's a gorgeous piece. I'm always on the look-out for fun restorations.
  • I've been inspired to redo some crappy end tables in our basement with this chalk paint and epoxy top idea...
