Losing weight

Longtime lurker, expecting April 18. I am 14w6d. Had my 4th month ob appt today. I weighed in at 169 lbs which is 3-4 pounds less than last month. I have had a diagnosis of hyperemesis gravidarum since 5weeks. And still have bouts of nausea/vomitting occasionally. I guess my question is should I be worried about my wt? anyone else struggle w weight gain? thank you for your time!

Re: Losing weight

  • If your medical care provider hasn't said anything, there's nothing to worry about. Trust your doctor. That's why your insurance is paying them the big bucks.

  • I'm 17w3d and down 26 pounds. While it isn't ideal to be losing weight during pregnancy, my midwife and my OB both assured me that the baby will take what it needs. I am so sorry you are suffering from HG, too- I am as well and I know it is quite miserable. Just do the best you can and eat if ams when you can, and baby will steal the nutrients it needs to grow.
  • I've lost 10 lbs & I'm 18 weeks.(without dieting) don't worry about it. This is my 2nd pregnancy & with my first I were a beach whale so I'm kinda glad.
  • Normal, especially with HG. I had it with my first and lost 10 pounds initially. I didn't start gaining at all until 15 weeks when I was finally able to begin to eat again. If your Dr wasn't concerned, you shouldn't be either!

  • Women in third world countries have babies all the time. Your baby will take what it needs from you and leave you with the remainder. Eat healthy and talk to your doctor. Also- you are 16 weeks not 14.

If your OB isn't concerned, you don't need to be. I gained 5 lbs early in my pregnancy, dropped a bit, and in the 4 weeks between my 12 and 16 week appointments only wound up .2 lbs heavier so I'm still only 5 lbs up from pre-pregnancy and I was small to begin with. My MW says as long as I'm getting enough nutrition and not doing anything to try to lose weight it's totally fine. Hope you start to feel better soon so eating isn't a struggle.

  • Like PP said, if your doctor is not worried, you shouldn't be.. You will likely get your weight gain request soon enough.. :)
Hang in there. Everyone is different, but if the doc said your ok then you are!
  • I'm confused. I'm due April 14th and today I'm 17w3d.
  • There is no way you are only in week 14.
  • I've lost weight too. My OB said he's not concerned since it's not dramatic weight loss. He says that I should just expect a growth spurt in the next couple months. My mom was the same way. She didn't gain anything and then in one month she gained 4lbs and the nurse yelled at her for it. Honestly surprised my mom didn't bitch slap her.

  • I've struggled with weight gain since the beginning and had lost about 5 pounds from my first appt to my 2nd. My doctor suggested high protein+high calorie smaller meals, more often during the day and also drinking either an Ensure or Boost type drink 1-2 times a day. They're really high in protein and are normally used to help older people or people with health issues to gain weight. I've seen a huge difference just in drinking those in the morning and before bed.
  • My doctor said technically you can lose 20% of your body weight and it not effect your baby's health. So unless your doctor is concerned I wouldn't be. Just make sure you're taking your vitamins.
  • What did your doctor say?

    Cuz the answer.. That :D

  • I have HG too and lost my 10 lbs during the first trimester. Are you able to get eat anything? I wouldn't worry about it as long as you're able to keep some food and water down and aren't dehydrated. I've been to the ER twice for IV fluids, which really helped.
  • I have been losing a little weight too. This is my third pregnancy and at the start I was at my full term pregnancy weight of my third (yep lost most right after) and then gained it all back! So I could afford to lose a few lbs here and there... Doctor said this was normal and not to worry. My belly is getting bigger but I notice other parts of me slimming down a bit! Thank you pregnancy!
  • I was overweight before getting pregnant and had lost 10 lbs as of last appointment. My Dr said that the babies are growing, so it's fine. I was always told that the body will do everything it can to protect the baby, even if it is at your expense. Of course, sometimes it can't, but I think this is the general rule. Just like how your baby will suck the calcium out of your stores if you are not getting enough. It will hurt you to lose the calcium, but the baby will get what he needs in most cases. Bottom line though is that I would just listen to the Dr. Hope this helps.
  • I'm dealing with HG as well, and I'm down 30 lb.s (I was not overweight to begin with, so that's a fairly big number). My dr. doesn't want to see me lose anymore, but wasn't overly concerned because baby is right on track for growth... This is really a question for your dr...
