I always used an automatic pencil in school (not elementary, but later on) because it was much easier and eliminated a lot of hassle. But I really prefer the way a good quality wooden pencil writes.
There are so many tattoo laser removal places popping up, it almost makes me think that there should be a one month period where people have to wear temporary versions of the tattoo they're getting so they avoid tattoo remorse.
Brought to you by people my H has been working with lately, we might have previously discussed this... I think that there should be a mandatory course in HS about budgeting and life skills. There was in our HS, but no one including the teachers really took it seriously. It really drives me crazy the amount of people I know/see who do such a poor job managing their money. Especially when I know for certain that they really have no decent excuse to be in the predicament they are.
My UO is going against the grain. I hate pencils. As a lefty, I think all pencils and certain types of pens should be banned! There is no amount of washing that gets the gray and black off after a long day at school scribbling away.
We used cloth wipes when we cloth diapered, but now that she's in a school that doesn't allow cloth diapering, we use One and Done wipes. They work pretty well.
We usually cloth diaper, and cloth wipe. But when traveling and if she stays with anyone we use disposables. I prefer Pampers to Huggies, but not enough for me to buy them when there's $2-4 in coupons for Huggies on Snap every time I buy. We also use the Huggies wipes when we are out and about. I keep a pack of One and Dones in the car always. They are my fave so far.
Now I feel as though I should go sniff some nappies in the UK ;-)
I'm in the disposables smell terrible camp.
We mostly finished off the pack of swaddler's that LO came home from the hospital with and the smell was just *blerg*. I'm sure I'd get used to it, but I'm happy to have my cloth diapers that IMO, don't smell of anything at all. Until there's poop involved, and then all bets are off.
I swear LO's poopy diaper this morning smelled just like the inside of a portapotty.
I'm a righty who doesn't like using pencils. I prefer to write in pen whenever possible. If I must write in pencil it must be an extremely sharp "traditional" pencil. I don't like mechanical pencils because they squeak when you write with them.
Samesies. I hate that mechanical pencil squeak. I also prefer pens, but can live with an old school wood pencil.
@Pitchslap - One of the first things that the secretary at work asked when she heard I was having a boy in June was if I was going to redshirt him for kindergarten. wtf lady??
I hardly knew it was a thing. Apparently it most certainly is.
I also don't get it. If your kid is ready for kindergarten, go for it. The sooner LO gets into the free public school system, the better!
Parents out here are ridiculous with that. I know a woman who kept her son out of kindergarten because they didn't get him into the school they wanted, so they figured they'd have another shot the following year. They did get him in, but eventually changed schools anyway. So ridic.
I think it's dumb when parent's "red shirt" their kids entering kindergarten just so they can be bigger than the others for when they get in high school and could possibly be recruited for whatever sport or appear smarter to colleges since they're older. Why are people starting competitions at like 5? (I get some kids really truly should be held back but it's not always for the kids benefit)
Agreed. It was very common where I went to school. I'm a mid October birthday and I was always the youngest in my class and I had no issues. I have a lot of friends who are holding their kids back that are born after September and I think it's silly.
For me, the Duggar thing is about having options and some freedom to choose how you live your life. The girls in the family (and possibly the boys to some degree) have never had that opportunity.
Here's an UO that I'm sure will be U. I am not amused when I see the videos of the toddlers who have covered entire rooms with baby powder or Desitin or lipstick or paint or whatever. How is that adorable? To me, it just screams child neglect. Sure, my kids can get into stuff, but I don't leave them unsupervised for long enough that they can coat every surface of an entire room. WHERE ARE THE PARENTS? The worst my son has done is when he drew a picture with eyeliner on the bathroom wall. He was potty training and asked to sit alone for a few minutes, so we were outside the bathroom door when it happened. But it's not like he was able to cover the entire toilet with nail polish (this happened to someone I know). I'm not saying that you have to hover over your children 24/7, but when they're toddlers, at least check in every minute or two.
@GraceInCA for the most part agree with the leaving a child unattended, but I will say one time I let something like that happen. We had thoroughly baby proofed G's room and I had the (audio) monitor in the bathroom with me to take a shower. He was gated into his room, which was across from the bathroom from me. During my 10 minutes in the shower he had found a way to reach up on a table (all furniture anchored to the wall), grab a tube of butt paste and opened the top and squeezed it everywhere. And are half of it. I called poison control immediately and didn't even think of taking a picture though. And I was too embarrassed I let it happen to try and pawn it off as cute.
I don't mind Gosling, but the Notebook was way cheesy. I rolled my eyes a lot. That being said if I had my period and wine it would probably make me cry now.
I am thrilled that you can see the remnants of Savannah's baby bump now that she's back on the Today show.
As someone who's body has not recovered quickly, it's nice to see that reality on tv.
The thing about the Duggars is that with any radical religious belief you are also most likely teaching your children intolerance. They are incredibly nice and kind to others and I don't think they are bad people, but if you drilled down you would realize they all think non-believers and people who do things that aren't "pleasing to The Lord" are going to hell. They never speak about this publicly but I guarantee you that is part of their belief system. And that sucks.
I too hope at least one of the Duggar girls breaks free. She could chop off her hair, enroll in college, and experiment with women. Or maybe that was just what I did and I'm projecting.
Get it girl! I wish that I was sneaky enough to go off and do that during my reception. Instead, I was worried about speaking to each and every guest.

FFTC: I have literally never heard the term "redshirted"
I don't personally know anyone who's held their kid back from entering kindergarten, but I do know 2 boys (my little brother's best friend and my half-brother) who had late birthdays and ended up spending 2 years in kindergarten. If I was on the fence I think I'd go this route. They get the opportunity to go to school and learn, but if they aren't quite mature enough for grade one, just circle back and do one more year
@steamboat123 paper bags for yard debris for the win. I actually wish they would have the yard debris garbage cans everywhere. It was so nice to not have to bag anything, straight into the bin they went and it was collected every other week.
The difference in Michelle/Jim Bob Duggar and all of their children is that they CHOSE their religion/beliefs/lifestyle, yet can't offer that same luxury to their children. They are very very nice people with very very dangerous views, and sadly, it is fascinating to watch.
Just realized we are talking about the Duggars here!
I grew up in a very conservative Christian background and still make God a priority in my life. But the major differences between my upbringing and the Duggars are: 1) It's a choice. My parents always emphasized that our religion was a choice, and never forced us or coerced us into believing anything. Sure, they taught us the Bible and raised us as Christians, but it still had to be our own thing. 2) Education. I just can't get behind the way they treat education. I don't necessarily have a problem with homeschooling, but I know their homeschooling is very very narrow. And they don't support college if their kids wanted to go. I can't get behind that. A real education is very important. 3) Treatment of the women. Girls and women are raised to think tat their only job in life is to be a good wife and mom. Yes, that is the most important role in my life, but it's not the only thing. It's just so backwards in this day and age to tell women that that is their calling, when it's not everyone woman's calling. And these girls are pretty much raising their younger siblings and lose out on their own childhood.
I'm all for choosing what you want to do. If you want to dress really conservatively, and make lots of babies, and stay home with them, and be a conservative Christian, then fine. But as long as you CHOOSE that for yourself. I just think the Duggars don't even know the choices that are out there for them. I just hope that they realize if they choose to wear pants, they can still be good Christians! I want their view of God and Christianity to be based on the Bible, not on what their parents say.
