Cloth Diapering

When did you begin CDing?

I know some of you started day one and others waited.  I'm thinking I want to start right away, but I'm wondering your opinions.  When did you start and why?  Are there benefits of waiting?  Any thoughts would be great!  Thanks!

Re: When did you begin CDing?

  • I think we did a newborn trial, maybe week 2 or 3? I wanted to start from day 1, but our house was under renovation and we didn't have any place to store or prep diapers. We moved back in a day before baby was due, and then we had 3 more nights before he came. So we just had a boatload of things going on.

I think NB is the easiest and best time to start CD. You go through a ridiculous number of diapers during those early days, so the cost savings is significant. Also, since the babies grow so fast, NB stashes don't suffer much wear and tear, and have good resale value.

  • I had everything ready, but waited about a week. Mostly because I was tired and didn't want to do laundry :-p.

I would encourage people to start from the beginning. With #2, I will. Even though I knew 100% I wanted to CD, I was still scared to make that switch, even after just 1 week. If my mom hasn't been here and helped (forced) me to switch, I might have given up before I started! But honestly, after I switched, the adjustment period was not that long, and I fell right into the swing of it.
  • We got a bunch of disposables from the hospital and a large box at our shower. We used those up first, and then went to cloth. I think it was a week or two? If we hadn't had the sposies, we would have just done cloth from day 1.

  • with #1 I waited until the cord fell off, but with #2 I started as soon as we got home from the hospital. NB really is the best time to CD. I can't tell you how many times I have gone through 2 or 3 diapers during a change, or changed immediately after.

  • I started after I left the hospital.  With DD she was in the hospital until about 5 days PP. My son was released the day after he was born.  I wore a few with him, but found that they irritated his umbilical cord, even folded down and very small sizes.  I stopped until the cord fell off then started again.  It didn't take long for his cord to fall off.

I personally think it's better to start early.  Then it becomes what you are used to and know rather than getting used to one type then changing.

  • We had everything ready but didn't start cloth until O was a week old. I don't really know why, but I wanted to be out of the tar poop stage and the cord stump to be gone (now that seems kind of silly looking back). It's really not as intimidating as it seems... it's pretty simple once you get started!
  • I intended to start the day we got home, but I didn't really get going until about 6 weeks. I had a rough physical recovery, lots of nursing problems, and I think some PPD, so it took a while for me to be able to think straight and get myself together. I wish I had started earlier- we were horrified at the number of disposables we were going through, and how much they cost.

With this baby I'm much more prepared for all of those things and I plan to start right away, probably the day we get home.

  • I intended to start as soon as we got home, but ended up with an emergency c-section and was back in the hospital a week later. I couldn't get off the couch without help. My husband had too much on his plate taking care of me, the house, the dog, and doing any baby care that could not be accomplished on the couch, so we used sposies until MIL showed up on day 8 and could help with the laundry.

If that had not happened, I would have been fine with starting as soon as we got home. We had at least one poop blowout a day in sposies the first week.

  • I started at about two months. Mostly it was time spent convincing dh. We used up all the shower gift diapers and had to go buy disposables and then he gave in and gave me the go ahead to buy cloth lol. For our next baby (whenever that may be) I would want to start as soon as I felt up to doing laundry (I have to go outside and do stairs to do my laundry)
  • We started as soon as DD could fit into her OS diapers. I didn't know much about CDing so I didn't buy a newborn stash ahead of time. We were also gifted most of the disposables we used so it wasn't a big expense. It worked fine but if/when we have another I will definitely start right away. I love CDing and man do you go through a lot of disposables in the first couple of months.

  • We started in the hospital. I think day 3, we left on day 4. It was pretty hilarious because we had practiced on a stuffed animal and couldn't get a trim fit on him with the prefolds at all and he screamed the whole time during all his diaper changes back then. Big learning curve, but we figured it out pretty quickly.

  • I intended to start when we got home from the hospital, but my LO broke his arm during delivery (well the doctor had to break it to get him out because he was stuck) and his arm/body was wrapped for his first month. At first his body wrap was too low and the cloth would be touching it so we were worried it would wick onto his bandages. After the first couple of weeks we got better at doing his body wrap and did cloth during the day. But we used disposables at night because all we had were flats and prefolds so it made night changed a bit too challenging at that point. After my fitteds and Kaiwi p&ns arrived we were cloth full time (so about a month).

It wasn't too costly for us, since we had 2 packs of newborn/size one Huggies from my shower and then we just bought an 80 pack of Up & Up size ones for overnight that first month.

    When Fluff Mail Arrives:
    image
  • We started when our boy was about 2 months old.
We came home from the hospital with a bunch of disposables and used those.  Between lack of sleep, depression issues, stress and not having a huge amount of help, I found the first 2 months or so to be completely and totally overwhelming.  I barely had time to shower, much less do diaper laundry.
About 8 weeks was when I gave up on trying to breastfeed and/or pump.  Once we stopped that, my stress level and depression improved immensely.
The first time I went out of the house (other than to the doctor or pediatrician) was at about 8 weeks.  I went to a secondhand children's clothing store and talked to a customer there that had her kid in cloth diapers.  Without knowing it, she sort of guilted me into using the cloth diapers.  Until then, they'd just been sitting in the drawer unused.
Alas....my little guy only fit into the diapers (prefolds and size 1 blueberry covers) for about 3 weeks, and then he was into the one size pocket diapers.

DD#1 we used disposables.  Yeah we sucked back then.

DD#2 we started at 4 mo.  That's when I woke up and realized that CD's were a great option.

DD#3 we started at 1 week.

ETA- If we were to do it again, we would put on a CD to come home from the hosp.
  • Started as soon as he stopped having meconium poops.

  • We started with our oldest at about 4 months. The reason being was we didn't think of cloth as an option until then. This time with our second, we started as soon as we got home from the hospital. I didn't want the diapers to accidentally be thrown away or disappear at the hospital.

  • I was a very late starter. I had a very difficult pregnancy and delivery and then my recovery was long and painful. I had a lot of nursing issues as well, got mastitis twice and ended up having to exclusively pump because we could never fix her extreme latch. So for quite some time I was just trying to keep my head above water and get through it. We used Huggies Pure and Natural. Once things started getting easier and I was feeling better I started thinking about trying cloth. We became almost full time cloth users around 7 months. The ladies on this board really encouraged me and for that I'm thankful.

  • After a week or 2. I had my stash, but used up what disposables I had on hand. I felt intimidated by the prefolds and covers, too, I believe. I was a FTM. With #2, I'll jump right in.

  • I waited till the cord fell off. I was so intimidated at first but just told myself to use three CDs a day at first. Then I fell in love :)

  • I didn't start until 3 months. I only had os diapers and didn't really know about newborn. The os were so big I had to wait quite a while for them to fit bit once they fit I went full force and have never doubted my commitment to cloth. If I have another I will defiantly start much earlier, as soon as we are home.

  • We started after a week so her cord could fall off.

  • Thank you so much for your thoughts! I think we'll plan to start right away and see how it goes. I'm planning on using Prefolds until he will fit into pocket CD. Thanks again!
