Calling all GD moms!

Well, the results are in, and I am officially a gestational diabetic. (Type 1 and 2 diabetics welcome as well!) I know not all of us have screened yet, but do we want to do a check in? I know we have a lot of them already, but I think it'd be nice to have one for this as well.

I'll start with this one, and gauge it from here.

1. When did you screen/find out your diabetic diagnosis?

2. Have you attended any education yet, or do you plan to in the future?

3. Have you made any dietary or activity changes since your diagnosis?

4. Do you have any fears/concerns about GD?

5. GTKY - What is your favorite fall treat?

Re: Calling all GD moms!

  • 1. When did you screen/find out?

I took my one hour GTT last week at 26w2d. Found out I failed the following day, so I took my three hour test on Saturday. Called today and was told I failed (27w1d)

    2. Have you attended any education?

They want me to go to a class on Thursday, but I have to work. Hoping to just gather literature.

    3. Any dietary changes?

    Not yet.

    4. Fears/concerns?

I'm mainly worried about this baby needing to be tested after birth. I don't want her to get extra pokes.

    5. I love pumpkin ooey gooey bars :) Paula Deen recipe :)

  • 1. I don't even remember anymore. I found out somewhere around 14-16 weeks. I was screened early because I was borderline last time.

    2. Yes, i attended education and glad I did!

    3. Dietary changes, yes! Counting carbs isn't hard, but trying to manage and figure out how they affect you can be. On the upside, I haven't gained any weight because of all the restrictions.

    4. I'm afraid that the baby will be affected, especially at birth and need to go to the nicu.

    5. My favorite is pumpkin pie! Maybe I can have one piece this fall. Or two!
  • Type 1 momma but I will join in...

    1. When did you screen/find out your diabetic diagnosis? I was diagnosed at 7 with type 1.

    2. Have you attended any education yet, or do you plan to in the future? When I as first diagnosed I was hospitalized for 2 weeks to get my sugars under control.  This was also the education period for both myself and my parents.  From then on I see my endo at least every six months, occationally I will do a clinic as well as a good reminder of the basics.

Pregnancy wise did an intro session with the diabetes and pregnancy clinic with the nurse.  Once that was done I have been going to clinic every three weeks.  Clinic entails an appointment with the nurse, the dietician and the endo.  Most everything is review for me as I've been managing this for 22 years but the rules are far stricter with pregnancy.

    3. Have you made any dietary or activity changes since your diagnosis? Actually had to scale back my activity due to not being able to keep up the intensity level I was doing prepregnancy (not diabetes related).  Dietary wise I'm back to basics with diabetes management.

    4. Do you have any fears/concerns about GD?  I've been a giant stressball the whole pregnancy with worry about hurting baby through not taking good enough care of myself.  While I know what I need to do really well with the diabetes it doesn't make it easy and the hormone fluctuations make it that much harder.  Also terrified of passing on my health issues to baby even though once again I know that chances are slim of that happening.

    5. GTKY - What is your favorite fall treat? Loves me some apple pie.  Not that ever I get any mind you :)

  • 1. Found out at 9 weeks and started on insulin. Pre pregnancy was on metformin for insulin resistance due to PCOS.

    2. I've met with a dietitian since 12 weeks; once a month.

    3. Definitely made some dietary changes, carb counting for sure! Looking forward to using this education and experience post pregnancy as well. With the changes I lost 13 lbs this pregnancy, just starting to gain weight now at 24 weeks.

    4. My biggest fear is baby having blood sugar issues after birth and needing to be in the nicu.

    5. No specific fall treats or cravings...yet!
  • 1. When did you screen/find out your diabetic diagnosis?
With DD, it was at 28 weeks.  Never got it with DS.  Got it at 18w this time.
    2. Have you attended any education yet, or do you plan to in the future?
I did with DD but didn't this time.  It didn't work with my schedule and I remember the "rules" from last time around.
    3. Have you made any dietary or activity changes since your diagnosis?
Yes, but I am not as "good" as I was with DD.  I know when I can cheat and do about every other day.  My cheating is to have a dessert 2 hours after dinner.  Often, it's around 20-30 carbs but my original diet said only 2 snacks a day.  I cheated with DD too.
    4. Do you have any fears/concerns about GD?
Not this time around, but I cried for 2 days when I was diagnosed the first time.
    5. GTKY - What is your favorite fall treat?
Caramel Apples I guess.  Hot chocolate is a favorite too.

  • I found out in the first trimester. I cried at first. It's just a way if changing your diet. I did see a nutritionist. I was concerned about my baby but everything is going great. I have an appointment every 2 weeks. I get more ultrasounds
  • I go in early next week for my 3 hour, so I'm not 100% sure if I'll get the GD diagnosis yet...but with my PCOS I wouldn't be totally surprised...

It's going to be a BIG change for me if I have to start eating differently...I'm skurred.

  • 1. When did you screen/find out your diabetic diagnosis?
My initial prenatal bloodwork showed sugar, so I had to do the GTT at 10 weeks. I did the one hour test, was told I failed, and then they didn't even have me do the 3 hour. Just said I had GD and needed to start seeing an endocrinologist. I've questioned it a bit. I only failed the one hour by 15 points. My endo even said she would classify me as insulin resistant, but not full on GD.

    2. Have you attended any education yet, or do you plan to in the future?
Nope and nope. At my initial endo appointment, the nurse went over some stuff with me. But I didn't have to take a class.

    3. Have you made any dietary or activity changes since your diagnosis?
Somewhat, but nothing major. I'm more cautious and aware of how many carbs/sugars are in what I'm eating and I try to watch portions. I've not really given up anything that I love, but rather I try to sneak in more healthy stuff in between. If I want pizza for lunch, then I eat pizza for lunch. But then I make sure to have a salad or something lower carb for supper. I'm 27 weeks and am up 12 pounds, so the plus side is my weight gain has stayed on the lower end of average. About 5 of those pounds have come since around the 20 week mark, which I expected it to pick up then since baby girl is growing at a faster rate now, too.

    4. Do you have any fears/concerns about GD?
Of course. I worry she's going to be too big and I'll have to have a c-section or that she's going to have sugar problems when she's born. But the worry doesn't change anything. I just try to relax, take care of myself and trust that I'm doing all I can to keep her healthy.

    5. GTKY - What is your favorite fall treat?
Fall is my favorite season. Most of my favorite fall things aren't food, but rather just the environment. Leaves, fireplaces, boots, sweaters, love it all! :)
  • @thompnia‌ I was just diagnosed today. Has there been any talk since you started this thread about a weekly check in? Would love the accountability and support, not to mention advice and reassurance.

  • @thompnia‌ I would be willing to take on the weekly check in (even though I'm a type 1 rather than GD momma). With me

  • 1. When did you screen/find out your diabetic diagnosis?
Monday - I took the 3 hr test on Friday, I'm 28 weeks +1 day today.
    2. Have you attended any education yet, or do you plan to in the future?
Nothing yet, but MFM is supposed to call me to schedule an appointment.
    3. Have you made any dietary or activity changes since your diagnosis?
Since I failed the 1 hr, I've been tracking my diet more closely and eating a more balanced diet with more frequent smaller meals/snacks. Also making an effort to take daily walks.
    4. Do you have any fears/concerns about GD?
My mom has type 1 diabetes and I grew up seeing her manage it, so I feel like I have a pretty good idea of what I need to do. However, both my brother and I were both born a month early and earned a 2 week+ hospital stay due to complications related to her diabetes. So I do have a nagging fear that this baby will earn a trip to the nicu. I have a lot of questions on how this is going to change the care for my pregnancy - extra visits, extra ultrasounds, will they let me go to 40 weeks, etc but I have to wait until my appointment with MFM for answers.

  • 1. When did you screen/find out your diabetic diagnosis?
2 weeks ago when I was 28.5 weeks

    2. Have you attended any education yet, or do you plan to in the future?
Met with a diabetic counselor and nutritionist

    3. Have you made any dietary or activity changes since your diagnosis?
i've been trying to get out and walk the dog more but it's starting to get a little chilly in MN! Mostly i've just been trying to balance everything out better... i've never been a breakfast eater and don't normally snack throughout the day so I found that I was eating large dinners but not enough early on- eating more meals but smaller amounts has helped and eating more protein and less carbs seems to be working pretty well. I've only gained 5 pounds during my pregnancy so my dr. and nutritionist are trying to up my calories without making me go over my range.

    4. Do you have any fears/concerns about GD?
yeah i'm mostly just worried of the risks involved and some of the worst case scenarios i've read on the internet (not sure why I did that to myself). When I found out I broke down and felt like I wasn't taking care of the baby as well as I should be but it was reassuring to have my doctor explain to me that my body wasn't making enough insulin and that the baby would be just fine if everything was monitored. Still fearful of the "what ifs" but trying to not let it stress me out too much.

    5. GTKY - What is your favorite fall treat?
    currently just wanting cookies... haha
  • Just found out this morning at 27w5d that I failed the screening, so its definitely a reassuring sign to see this posting as i'm not alone! My score was pretty high so to be honest I'm not too optimistic about passing the three hour. (That's the spirit! Lol) thanks for starting this @thompnia‌ just in case. I'll be back!

I would love to participate in a check in; I just know myself well enough that I won't run one.

That being said, any tips on controlling fasting levels? I never met with a dietician. My one hour after meal levels are great, even when I eat like crap (one meal was 3 golden oreos, a restaurant blueberry muffin, and a can of coke - 1 hr was 119.) Unfortunately, my fasting levels are not so great. Last night after supper was 106, and 10 hours later the fasting was 87... not terrible but I just dont understand it.

ETA my normal after meal values are under 100

  • 1. When did you screen/find out your diabetic diagnosis?
  • Well crap. I lost my whole reply and mobile won't let me edit. Boo.

I found out today and plan to attend education. I am a nurse so I am already freaking myself out. I'm hopeful for a healthy baby but know the effects all too well.

Thanks for starting this check in. Here is to healthy babies for us all!
  • Ok, so technically I do not have GD but my 3 hour test came back with 1 abnormal value. I go to a nutritionist Tuesday and will have to test at home. A little frustrated but what can I do? I have not changed my diet as of yet but I do have a lot of pasta in my diet and I am aware that that will prob be out for awhile. Not looking forward to having to deal with this through the holidays.
  • Okay ladies the check in idea seems to be popular and I'm willing to run it. How about we use Wednesdays as our check in? :)

@thompnia Fasting/permeal numbers may actually be affected from previous meals. I know for me I've been playing more with my insulin requirement for what carbs I eat than my basal/background insulin (it's a bit hard to compare type 1 to GD I know). What I'm finding is that any meal with too much fat in it is really slowing down how my body processes the carbs I eat leading to my sugars not really dropping even hours after my meals. If you keep havin issues I would suggest talking to your doc. It may be that your insulin resistance is enough that you might need a small dose of oral meds to help counteract it.

@storm08 I totally understand your worries! Keep in mind that technology and treatment of diabetes has evolved a lot since your mom had you. Despite how bad my control was coming in to this pregnancy neither my OB or endo are worried about a NICU stay for LO given my control throughout the pregnancy :)

@KnitPixy, that is really interesting and thank you for being willing to do the check in.

I have been having the same issues as @thompnia. Good after meal sugars, but kind of crappy fasting #'s. The oddest thing has been happening though, I've been really religious this week at taking my prenatals and baby aspirin (prescribed to me because of my history of pre-e) after dinner and before my nighttime snack. I normally have numbers in the mid to high 80's on a good morning or anywhere from low to high 90's on a bad morning. But this week I've had 2 or 3 days in the 70's! I don't know if a miracle has happened or if it's related to lessening stress I've been struggling with for months, or if it could be related to the timing and religiously taking the prenatals (I would normally forget and take them 3-4 times a week). I'm not complaining, but I'm afraid it's a fluke. The nurse sounded really surprised this morning when she replied to my email with my weekly numbers!

  • Thanks @KnitPixy :) I know logically that treatment has improved greatly just based on how much better my mom can manage things now with an insulin pump and continuous bg monitor. I just talked to her last night and she said the same thing you did! Darn these pregnancy hormones that have me freaking out.

  • 1. When did you screen/find out your diabetic diagnosis?

    I found out last monday

    2. Have you attended any education yet, or do you plan to in the future?

Yes I went to the class last friday or on Halloween.

    3. Have you made any dietary or activity changes since your diagnosis?

Yes, I am following the diet now as I wasn't before.  I am also walking to keep my sugar levels down.

    4. Do you have any fears/concerns about GD?

Honestly, yes.  It has been a hard adjustment.  My biggest fear is not having a healthy baby and I am also scared of getting diabetes when I am older.  I am also feeling overwhelmed trying to figure out what works and doesn't work for me.  My fasting numbers have not been good although my after meal numbers are,

  • 1. When did you screen/find out your diabetic diagnosis? Week 28 check failed 1hr glucose, no surprise since I have insulin induced PCOS. I was hoping I passed 3hr GTT,I took it yesterday, I failed that as well. 2. Have you attended any education yet, or do you plan to in the future? I picked my glucose monitor today. I go to my education class on Monday. 3. Have you made any dietary or activity changes since your diagnosis? I cut down on carbs and sugars since the first test and lost four lbs. My dr says I've gained too much weight(30lbs @ 28wks), so guess that's a good thing. 4. Do you have any fears/concerns about GD? Worried about how it will effect my LO 5. GTKY - What is your favorite fall treat? Denny's ginger bread toast, sooooooo good! First thing I ate after the 3hr GTT, I enjoyed every bit.
  • failed 3 hour two weeks ago and met with a nutritionist a few days later.

i've been carb counting and hate it! i've had a few post dinner checks that have been over, but it's been a rough week with a family funeral and couldn't cook/prepare meals very well. also some of my fasting numbers are in the mid/high '90s, but dr just told me to continue to track. doesn't correlate at all to my numbers from the night before as best i can tell. i am gaining weight, i assume b/c all i snack on now are nuts and cheese, but not really sure. i feel hungrier way often and really, really, really miss cereal.

favorite treat is home baked cookies. miss them! i also miss being able to raid my kids' halloween candy.

  • 1. When did you screen/find out your diabetic diagnosis?
3 or 4 weeks ago, I failed the 2 hour test (my doc just does 2 hour not 1 + 3)

    2. Have you attended any education yet, or do you plan to in the future?
    Yes, I attended a class

    3. Have you made any dietary or activity changes since your diagnosis?
Mostly my diet was not too bad as far as high sugar loads, so I haven't had to change the foods that I chose, just the amounts and timing.  Big changes there, though... my dietician has me doing 3 snacks and 3 meals per day, basically eating every 2 hours.  I have carb targets for every meal and snack.

    4. Do you have any fears/concerns about GD?
Not too worried about anything except baby size.  In the education class, they showed a photo of a 7 lb baby lying next to a 15 lb baby, BORN ON THE SAME DAY to a mother with GD.  Scared the ever loving shit out of me.  That baby looked like a sumo wrestler, and his head was about the size of the whole 7 lb baby.  But, I had an ultrasound yesterday and baby size is on track for gestational age.  My blood sugar is ok after meals but my fasting #s were not good so I'm on a small dose of slow-release insulin that I inject at night.  My dad has been taking insulin as long as I can remember (he's type 2), so that part is no big deal to me.
