Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Breastfeed

Hello my son in now almost 14 months old and I am nursing. For my sanity I want to transition him to milk but he won't take it. I work part time and when I pump I get small amounts of milk that he gulps down to fast. I need suggestions on what I could try. Thanks.

Re: Breastfeed

  • Keep offering whole milk.  Milk is not necessary at this age so any little bit he takes is good.  Offer other healthy dairy as an alternative.

My DS has never liked milk and had a rough transition.  He still drinks at most 6 oz per day.  We just offer cheese and yogurt and per our doctor offer a vitamin D supplement twice per week.  We just kept offering it to him every day and eventually he started drinking a bit.

  • We are still nursing at 14 (almost 15 now) months. I guess my best advice is to keep offering it, sometimes it can take awhile for them to get used to. Unfortunately, I think my LO may be allergic to WCM. At 12 months my pedi said, let's wait until 15 months and then reconsider testing, But that is neither here nor there.

My LO likes the taste of WCM but every time he gets red and rashy. I am trying to get him interested in Whole Goat's Milk but so far no dice. Almond or Coconut milk may be my next contenders.

    Hang in there Mama!

  • Dont worry!! Our Dr said not to worry if dd wasn't getting a lot of milk. She gets enough from yogurt, cheese, etc.
As for weaning, dd was almost 14 months old. I just slowly stopped offering it. Try almond or coconut milk. Weaning is hard but eventually they get over it.
Congratulations on breastfeeding that long. I nursed ds 13 months & dd almost 14 months. Its something to be proud of!!

  • it took my LO 2 weeks of repeatedly offering WCM for her to finally be interested in drinking it.  And then she took it just fine.

  • My 18 mo still nurses once a day.  Around 12 months I started mixing BM with WCM because I wanted to stop pumping. I did a 75/25 ratio for a few weeks, then 50/50, then 25/75, then straight WCM.  She didn't drink as much WCM at first but lately she can't get enough.  I think it just takes some time for them to get use to and like the other ladies suggested I would give her other dairy such as cheese and yogurt during the transition.
  • My lo hated cow's milk. I just offered it everyday. One day he took a sip and the next a little more etc. He now has one cup everyday. As others said, I just made sure he had cheese and yogurt until he got on board with the cow's milk.
