Re: Evening GTKY: Election Edition
I consider myself an Independent but tend to lean right. This election the main thing I have been concerned about is the increase in our healthcare premiums for the 2nd year straight and all the standardized testing the government puts our kids through.
2. Is your political beliefs the same or different than your parents?
My parents are very Republican, but will vote for character/beliefs over party. I'm not as conservative as they are.
3. Was there anyone who had a significant influence on your political views?
Mine was shaped by my experiences in life and my religious beliefs.

1) independent. Like have actually split my ballot in the past. Can't stand either party to be too far in one direction.
2) probably the same, but not always at the same time. They bounce too but there have been years we have leaned in opposite directions
My Ovulation Chart
1. I'm very liberal. I'm mostly motivated by economic policy. I'm socially liberal too, but I kind of feel like evolution on that front is a given. When it comes to the fiscal issues that really shape people's lives, though, not so much.
2. My mom's a staunch democrat; my dad has a serious libertarian streak but also usually votes democratic.
3. My politics have mostly been shaped by my experiences and those of the people I've worked with (in Chicago's non-profit sector). When I was a teenager, I was actually pretty conservative (think Alex P. Keaton). The older I get, the more I realize that life is not a meritocracy, things aren't always fair, hard work doesn't guarantee--much, and, oh, never mind. I could go on.
4. I just want to get in here that even if we disagree politically, I love my fellow bumpies! Happy election night, ladies! :x

@vh2014 My parents and I have differed a time or two as well.
@Davie813 When you said Alex P. Keaton, The Facts of Life Girls in their plaid skirts and ties popped in my head. Probably because they were shown on the same night. Do you think your conservative streak was teenage rebellion?
@b0710 We live in an area so Democratic, a lot of races go uncontested by a republican because it is just a waste of money. We end up with a lot of Republicans voting for the best Democrat because there is no other choice.

2) My parents are staunch Republicans.
3) I have travelled a lot and met many different kinds of people. I am highly opinionated and strong willed. I think I try and look at things from a "what's fair" stand point. I have a pretty open mind, a live and let live mentality and I guess that's where my political opinions originate.

2. Is your political beliefs the same or different than your parents? Similar, my mom is more conservative in social stances than I am but for overall economic policies we agree more often than not.
3. Was there anyone who had a significant influence on your political views? My stepfather. He was an intelligent, compassionate man who had a wonderful understanding of history and how past policies will affect our country. He was a WWII veteran, a physician and the most compassionate, intelligent person I have known in a personal way. I made a very flippant statement as a ?freshman 19yr old, he sat me down and we discussed for a very long time why he felt my statement was ignorant. He was right, I began not listening to college/liberal widespread talking points and started reading and learning factual, historical, political books/etc. He is/was my hero. He would be very saddened, I believe, by the situations our country has created.
ETA, now the Facts of Life theme song is stuck in my head. Thanks, @lcwed!

My Ovulation Chart
2. I look for healthcare first, primarily Medicare since my job relies on Medicare reimbursement. I look at education and views on government spending.
3. My parents (especially my dad) only vote on a candidate that is pro-life. It doesn't seem to matter what the rest of their views are, I want to bang my head against the wall.
4. If anyone has shaped my views it was the very conservative upbringing. Once I left home I started to further educate myself and find that I have different opinions than the ones I was told to have! Lol I have never made it a point to bring up some of my political views to my folks. I think it would crush them.
2. My parents are conservatives. We never talked about politics growing up. Except I do remember that my grandparents liked the elder Bush.
3. I really liked John McCain's honesty when he was running for the Republican presidential nomination in 2000. He made me realize that I am open to any party when a candidate sparks my interest or respect.

I was really surprised a couple of years ago when my dad and I were on a road trip and somehow the topic of reproduction rights came up. Given his life long republican leanings, I was floored when he told me he was pro-choice. Maybe it's from having 3 daughters....
