Umm, I have car seats in 5 out of 6 back seats in my van. So... Which reminds me that I need to contact the certified car seat tech and have my seats reset. They know the safest spots for the kids, so I have them do it. Being so pregnant, they install for me instead of having me install under their guidance and them check.
Rear passenger, I have to parallel Park a lot and I'd rather have to take her out of the seat on the sidewalk side of the car. Our car doesn't allow for latch installs in the middle.
Rear driver side. I think I read somewhere that instincts make the driver "protect" that side more. I might be making that up though. Sounds legit to me.
this. i read before that the reason we drive on the right hand side..and the reason why the person to the left go first at a stop sign, etc..are all ways to "protect" the drivers side...so i put my youngest LO on the left side, since he still has more growing to do. big sister has the right side.
There is a mom at dd's daycare who puts her car seat in the middle rear and she always has to get in the car to take her kid out or put him/her in. I was curious, so I googled it. Apparently the middle is the safest, and it would probably be the most comfortable for the people in the front seat. That's how this poll was born.

That's what our carseat tech told us. My car has side airbags in the back and she said having the seat in the middle would prevent the airbag from impacting the carseat and potentially causing injuries. But whenever #2 comes along, we'll have to put one on each side.

We have bucket seats or captain seats in the back so we have no middle seat to put him in.

This is how I do it, too. Climb in, get him settled and buckled, climb back out.

Me too. It's a minor pita, but I feel better knowing she has a couple extra feet of space on either side in case some lunatic hits the side of the car.
I was just going to make the same point about the weather. I really don't mind it at all, but we have a Jeep that is pretty easy to climb in and out of.
I definitely don't mind and I'd do anything to keep my kid safe. I remember before I had dd I looked in the car's manual and it said to put it behind the passenger's seat. I was surprised to see it in the center in that mom's car which is why I googled it.

That's weird to me that it would say that. Was it just saying that if you want to use LATCH, you can't put it in the middle? Or was it saying behind the passenger is the only place to put it?
Everything I've read says that middle is safest (not that the sides aren't safe, of course they are).
To be honest, I think it said something like the best place to put a carseat is behind the passenger's side. It did point out the LATCH anchors on both sides (driver and pass.). It didn't say NOT to put it in the middle, I think just that the best place to put it was behind the passenger side.
I wanted to put it in the rear center, but could NOT get it tight there at all. Figured wherever it was installed the best was probably safest, so it's behind the passenger seat. Also I can see him better back there than directly behind me.

Yes, I like that I can see her now too. I don't think the backseats are all level but I'm going to check tonight when I get home.
Center as we only have one child and it's the safest by around 25%. They haven't found any conclusive evidence that the driver side is the next safest due to 'serving' or what not.
OK question --- so center is best. But what if you don't have latches for the center. Is that still better to use center and no latches or one of the sides and built in latches?
We don't have latch in the center, but we used the belt to install. I'm confident in our installation abilities without latch. DD1 was in the center until the day DD2 was born. Now she's on the passenger side ONLY because of school drop off. She gets out on that side at kiss and ride, so that is where she has to be.
After almost 3 years of IF and a crazy roadside delivery, we are loving life with our second beautiful daughter!

@skyla13 Latch and belt are equally as safe . So yes, it's safer to use the center and do a seat belt instal. Also, latch now has a weight limit so eventually all have to be installed via seatbelt unless the child is pretty petite.
Rear center...DH is really tall so it would be almost impossible for him to drive with the seat behind driver, plus I read middle is safer anyways...not sure what we will do when we have the next one lol
Rear center. It was rear driver's, until I had multiple people in my car for a 8 hour round trip drive. I never rearranged back. I don't mind getting in and out
We have LO in the middle. She's still in the infant seat. We have a FF convertible seat on the passenger side for my niece/nephew and sometimes have three seats installed when we all go somewhere together.
Graham is passenger side and Tillie is behind the driver. Initially, they were reversed but when we put him in a RF convertible seat I felt like him being behind the driver the high back on the seat was blocking my vision. DD is forward facing so not the same issue. I feel like I'm uber cautious about left turns now because I know he would be in the impact zone.
Re: where is your LO's car seat installed?
DS2 - 8/08
DS3- 9/09
DD1 - 11/11
DD2 - 10/13
DD3 - Csection Scheduled November 29th
LO then (2 days) and now (1 year)
I have a minivan so its the driver's side middle. DS1 is on the passenger side.
When I only had DS1 and a Jeep he was in the middle. If I only had 1 kid and no minivan it would be in the middle.
