3rd Row SUVs

I'm a huge PW today.

My lease is up next month and we are going to upgrade to a larger SUV. I am looking at the Nissan Pathfinder, Honda Pilot, Hyundai Santa Fe, Toyota Highlander and Dodge Durango. If anyone has any particular views (good or bad) on these cars, I would love it. We are just getting the base model.

Dirty lurker who hasn't re-intro'd yet but we just got a used Toyota highlander (hybrid version) and love it.

Aaaand slipping back into the shadows now...

Edited to give some specifics: love the gas mileage, Toyota has always been dependable for us and has great trade-in/resale value, and it has vents in the ceiling for the AC which was important for me since we want to stay rear facing as long as possible, which can get hot in Texas.

  • Also following, going car shopping Saturday but really no clue what to get. My husband has a small SUV so debating on a bigger one to be the new family car (only 1 LO now but plan to keep this car for the next) or get a sedan with better mileage and use his car as the family car which could get a little tight with two kids. But we could cross that bridge when we get there in another 2ish years.
  • My sister in law had a dodge Durango and liked it till the transmission went out which I hear is a common problem with them. That's actually what steered us away from them and we got a GMC envoy.
  • LOL @meg2j! I'm always off-roading.
  • I got a (used) Toyota Highlander on Mother's Day (a nice "push present" for myself) and I really love it! It's such a smooth ride and you can really pack it full. I found that it had better gas mileage than it's competitors.

I convinced one of my mommy friends to buy one and she actually got a brand new one (that beotch-jk).
  • I used to drive a santa fe and really liked it.

My lease is also up (next week) and I'm upgrading from a corolla (man that baby has been tight with the car seat!) to a Rav4. It sounds like you're looking for something a little bigger, but I wanted to AW for a second because I am psyched!

  • Lurky loo from May 14, I have a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder and I absolutely love it. I test drove a Highlander and I did like it, to be fair. Drove like a car, good gas mileage. But it was definitely smaller than the Pathfinder with almost no cargo space when the third row was up. I had a Camry prior to this and I get very comparable gas mileage which was surprising to me, but in a good way. For me, it came down to which had more space. I know Highlander just had a redesign so maybe they are bigger now. I don't think you could go wrong with either to be honest.

  • I'm interested in this as well. We've been thinking about what our next car would be and we're looking to upgrade to a SUV with enough room for our potential 4 kids. Love the Highlander and the Pathfinder but dang re they expensive. We rented a GMC Acadia for a week and really liked it, though we've also considered looking at the Kia Sante Fe (I've had excellent experience with Kia). Good to see the Highlander is favorable :)

  • Not on your list but we LOVE our Ford Explorer. I got in a pretty significant car accident when pregnant and the car was a champ. The other car was totaled and mine drove away. We bought another to replace it.

The gas mileage is decent, great suspension and drives like a car. I can park it anywhere. The on demand all wheel drive is great.

  • I believe pathfinder has a hybrid version which has good mileage. I have the Infiniti version which I love. Kind of wish I waited a few month for the pathfinder to come out which are practically the same car... Would have save a lot of money. Anyway we rarely use the third row but it is not too cramped. We mostly fold it down for extra storage. The most I got was 33 mpg which is freaking awesome... Average is more like 26 which isn't bad for a large SUV.
