Painful letdown?

FTM Mom here and I'm thrilled to say I have been able to EBF my five week old DS. I don't think I ever really felt the letdown until the last week or so. It seems painful to me. Not sure if that's normal. The best way I can describe it is like exteme pins and needles you get when your foot falls asleep. Its a very painful feeling but thankfully only lasts for a short amount of time, maybe 30 seconds. I go to the doctor in a few weeks and can ask then too but it seemed like a lot of the ladies on this board have been EBFing for a long time. TIA!

Re: Painful letdown?

  • Yep, normal.  Like PP, I didn't really notice the letdown unit after a month of BF.  The sensation was overwhelming but lasted for a few seconds.  Everything with BF seemed to smooth out after 3 months for the most part.

  • Thanks ladies! Glad to know it's normal and temporary.

  • I didn't feel it until later like PP but am still feeling it at  4 1/2 months. It's short though so I use it as a way to know that DD is finally getting milk. Sometimes she is very ravenous so I have to hold her on when she doesn't get instant gratification

  • My DD is 7 months and I still feel my letdown, it is just not as intense.

  • Yes! It's downright painful sometimes! I remember with DD1, it was like that in the beginning but as the months progressed I didn't have it anymore.
