To double stroller...or not to?

I'm struggling way more than I should with this.

DD will almost be 2.5 when LO is born. Up until the last 3 months (with the exception of when she was a NB), we have barely used her stroller. I originally had no plans of investing in a double stroller, but now that we are using it for DD a lot more, I am thinking we may need to do it.

How long do toddlers need strollers though? Are we only going to get a years worth of use out of it? Would we be better off just getting a cheapy second stroller and hope that one of us never has to take both kids out at once by ourselves? I'm so torn!

Here is the one i'm considering. It's not terribly expensive, looks nice, and fits our britax b-safe carrier. Any advice?

Re: To double stroller...or not to?

  • DD is 16 months so we are in a different age range, but I can't imagine wrangling two alone without a stroller. Even just in a parking lot. I think even if you just use it a few months, you'll be an old pro parent of two by then, but those first few months it could help a lot. Maybe find something used or resell when you're done so it's not such an investment.

  • DD will be 19 months old when LO is born but we are not buying one. I plan on wearing the baby as much as I can and we still don't use the stroller very much. If I find that I'm having problems I'll buy a sit n' stand since they seem much more affordable and practical.

  • We don't use the stroller a ton - usually just if we are going to the mall or during the carnival/fair times - basically when I know we are going to be doing a lot of walking in a crowded area.   I plan to go with the sit and stand.

  • I think it just depends on how much you use your stroller.  For us, it was a necessity when DS2 came along.  DS1 was 22 months at the time.  We used/still use a stroller everyday since we walk to many places (bakery, bus stop, train station, etc).  DS2 rode in the double stroller until about 4. Even now, our 4 and 6 year old still take turns on the roller board attached to the stroller.  This is b/c we walk/travel a lot and someone's legs inevitably stop working.

I cannot imagine how we would get by without one. It has made our lives much more enjoyable!

  • We had tossed around the idea, but DD really enjoys walking more than riding so I think we will stick with our single and just buy a kick board for the back she can stand on when she wants.

  • I will use the double but that's because I'm not big on wearing and DS likes to ride a lot.

  • My SIL  hasn't used her stroller yet and the her youngest is 5months with a 2.5 year gap.  But what I can tell you is that we looked into the Contours for our twins and it got many mixed feelings.  I loved that you could change positions of the seats but the little parts that hold the seats in are plastic and they start to wobble after so much use,  also you have to take one of the seats off to close it.

  • I could have written the exact same post. I can't decide what to do. I dragged DH to BRU the other day and we looked at a Sit n Stand type stroller and he thought that is the best way to go. We were leaning towards not getting one at all, but I think I have changed my mind on it just becuase it would be okay if I was with someone, but if I want to take both boys out at the same time, I just don't know how I would do it.

This is what we are looking at now:

I orginally thought all double strollers were like $400, but now I see other opinions.

  • We don't use a stroller a ton, but with 3 years between our boys we went with the Sit and Stand option and that works great for us. By the time DS#2 was big enough for a stoller, DS#1 was 3.5+ and we're STILL using the Sit and Stand at almost 6 and 3...

  • Ours will be 18 months apart and we don't use a stroller often. If I will be by myself with them both I wanted a stroller to get them around especially in a parking lot. We got a sit and stand in excellent almost brand new from a consignment shop. That way I won't feel bad if we don't really use it because we paid way less than half price of a brand new one.
  • My first 2 are 19.5 months apart and I never used one with them. I wore DD2 for a good 9+ months so by the time we were past that DD1 no longer needed the stroller. DD2 hasn't used the stroller in about a year now so I don't plan to purchase one this time either.

  • DS will be almost 3 when DD is born and I'm getting one.  DS is a runner and I can't imagine not being able to contain him when I need to.  I also have visions of him jumping off a Sit N Stand when he sees something shiny, so I'm getting a side by side double.  Either the City Mini Double or the Britax B Agile double.  I'd imagine I'll probably also wear DD and push DS in a stroller when I can,  but those two stroller options can be used from infancy so I don't need a carseat adapter or anything.

  • DS will be 2.5 yrs old when LO is born. I decided to do the sit and stand option. I figured I'd use it for walks in the neighbourhood and to places like the zoo and such. DS still likes rides in the stroller but likes to get up and down too.

  • ugh Im torn too, I would like to jog but Im not sure how that will go with a double so Im thinking sit n stand is the way to go.

Im hoping to find a used one, I look on craiglist everyday
  • I would totally go the sit and stand route if our Infant seat fit it. Gahhhh.

We went with a Joovy Caboose - it's basically a sit & stand. The front has an adaptor to hold our Chico carseat and DS (who will be 3 when DD arrives) can sit on the seat in back if he wants to.

We got ours for $100 on a swap site, extras included.

What infant seat do you have?

We have the Britax B Safe. Looking again, I realized the Graco doesn't fit it. But the Baby Trend one says it does on Amazon. Thinking of calling them though.

This whole thing is way more confusing then it should be. I just don't want to spend $400 on a double stroller! Ugh!

Craigslist always seems to be crawling with these!

I found mine on a local facebook swap site.

  • I went with the Joovy when I had my second, got the adapter for infant carrier and totally loved it, so did my oldest. Stroller was much lighter and easier to transport that the stroller I had that matched the carrier. Number 3 is on the way, 6 yr gap between him and number 2. Probably won't need the Joovy as a double option but planning to use it anyway because I loved it so much.
