Nursing moms - ?

Now that LO is nearing a year, what are your nursing/weaning plans? If you're pumping, will you continue?

This is the longest time I've nursed, so I'm not sure where to go from here! I think I will stop pumping and just nurse evenings/weekends. My supply will regulate to allow that, right?

Re: Nursing moms - ?

  • My plan is to start weaning from the pump after this weekend. Right now, I pump 3 times at work then 1 time at home after LO goes to bed (he gets a bottle of formula at bedtime). Next week, I'll do 2 at work/1 at home and do that for a week and a half or so, then 1 at work/1 at home, then just the one at home. LO is down to nursing just in the mornings pretty much during the week. I can't get him to nurse after work most days so the weekends will be the tricky part. He loves real food so I'm not anticipating too much of a problem.

From what I've read, your supply should regulate to that since your LO is 11 months old. I would wean from the pump though. I don't know if you're prone to plugged ducts or mastitis, but getting it this late in the game would suck!

  • My plan is to slowly start weaning after his first birthday.  He currently only nurses 2-4 times which isn't a lot but I think it is going to be a challenge to get him to drop all of them.  He is constantly signing "milk" to me so I'm hoping when I introduce regular milks he will be content with that and move on from nursing.  I am not in any hurry though.

  • With DS1, I started dropping one nursing or pumping at a time, going with his queues. Slow & steady I think is the best.  Don't drop all your work pumping sessions at once. Drop them one at a time, & give yourself at least a week or 2 between another session drop.  If your LO is not night nursing, I'd start with dropping work pumping sessions one by one first.  DS1 started not needing to nurse to sleep at night, so we dropped that one around 10-11 months old I think. He was already STTN starting at 4 mo, so I didn't have to worry about dropping night nursings like I will have to with DS2. That is going to be my next step is to get him off the night nursings before I try to drop any others. DS was completely weaned by about 13-14 months old. he was then ADDICTED to the whole milk he got. :)

I dropped 1 of my usual 3 pumping sessions at work a few weeks ago. He has been eating table foods really well & takes about 2 5-oz bottles at day care outside of his breakfast & lunch there.

@mcncheese - I think that is probably pretty typical around this time when you are nursing more on weekends than you nurse during the week.  You may notice that the fullness you feel is moreso at the beginning of the week & lessens as the week comes to an end.. then it might feel full again after the weekend where LO has amped your supply again.

    Good luck!

  • For the last month I've been pumping once a day around 2 in the afternoon.  I nurse LO in the morning, at night, and on weekends.  I was planning on letting LO take the lead as for when he wants to wean.  I want to stop pumping at work by LO's birthday.
  • LO has cut back significantly since her appetite for real food has picked up over the past few weeks. But she nurses before she naps and at night...it is such a big part of her sleep routine that I'm fearful I won't be able to wean easily as it is so tied to comfort. She refuses bottles and doesn't do a paci so I'm not sure how to replace the nursing in the bedtime routine...

I'm down to 2 pumps a day at work and plan to drop to 1 in a couple weeks. I hope to finish stop pumping by Christmas at the latest. I don't have a plan on weaning from nursing yet, but will follow his lead somewhat. LO is dairy intolerant so WCM is out of the question and need to discuss with Ped about the next step.

I'll be the odd one here, lol. I have no plans to wean. I'll let LO wean himself when he's ready. I'm aiming for 2yrs, if he wants to.

Edit: I haven't pumped in months. So, nothing to wean from there
  • I don't pump anymore but I plan to continue nursing until at least 1 year and will likely continue afterwards with a morning and night bf. She only nurses between 4-5 times a day now, and we just dropped one session to introduce a few ounces of WCW.
  • Called the ped today and got the go ahead to intro wcm because I have officially depleted my freezer stash. (I only pump enough for 2 bottles/day and he drinks 3). I've been pumping 2x/day, so I think I'll drop one session, wait a couple of weeks and drop the pump entirely. Will keep nursing for awhile. It's very comfort-based for him. Don't see us dropping it any time soon.

@Jen4033‌ how do you plan to get ds2 off of night feedings? I need help with this.
@Nrg2020 - I've been the sole person to get up with him since he was born because my husband works long hours operating heavy machinery.. so it has been our best interest for me to fall asleep at my desk vs he fall asleep at the wheel. :) . I've tried in the past just rocking him back to sleep & he did well for like a week when he as about 5-6 mo old. Then he got sick & since then he only cries like crazy til he gets it. I don't think he is even hungry, I think it is just for comfort.

My DH is due to be done working for the season very soon & my plan is to start having him go to him instead.  If DS2 cannot smell the milk or knows dad doesn't have any... maybe he will settle down & go back to sleep.  That is just my plan to start with for now. Fingers crossed it does the trick! Right now he is up usually at least once a night, but every once in a while he'll be up twice. If that doesn't work then I am not sure what I will do, but it will probably include some crying nights. :(

  • I have NO idea how I am going to wean this kid. She loves her some boob. I've been trying to offer solids instead of nursing and it has helped to cut back during the day, but I feel like she is making up for it at night. She used to sttn and now she wakes at least twice just to eat!
  • @sweett11‌ I have the same question. We did CIO for the first night feeding around 8 months so now she goes until 4am and wakes up like clockwork to eat every night. I have no idea how to wean her off of it because she goes ballistic if my DH goes in or if I go in and don't feed. I've been reading about the jay Gordon method and may try that. Basically you shorten the time of each night feeding progressively...who knows if it will work.

  • Ben is 11 months and has dropped to only nursing about 4 times per day and eating more solids/drinking water from a sippy.  The two mid-day nursing sessions can probably be dropped semi easily, it's mostly a comfort thing because I'm pretty sure my supply isn't that great during the day.  I guess my plan for now is to continue to let him nurse at night and for his 4/5 am feeding as long as we are both enjoying it.  Although to be honest I'd enjoy that early morning feeding a lot more if it was around 6:30 or 7am!  I think he'll drop it when he's ready, I can tell he's actually pretty hungry at that time.  I have tried to offer WCM a couple of times this week and he doesn't really take it, but doesn't seem to be entirely offended by it either.  We have a lot of traveling coming up this month and it would be SO much easier to give him the occasional bottle or sippy of WCM than traveling with frozen milk and my pump, etc.

  • I got the go ahead to start with WCM, so I am just now starting the weaning process (LO is 11 months), which I'm pretty excited about! I dropped one pump session this week that I used to do right before work. LO still nurses 6-8 times probably in 24 hours so my goal is to drop one per week. I only do 2 pump sessions at work, so those are the main ones I want to get rid of, then I'll drop the one other daytime nurse session so that we'll be down to just morning, bedtime, & nighttime feedings.

@sweett11‌ I'm right there with you on having no clue of how to end the nighttime feedings. I don't really have a hope of it ending soon. My only thought is that maybe if it continues I'll just eventually wean from those too so she can have bottles & DH can help so it won't be just me all the time. I'll probably talk to the pedi to see if she has any thoughts.
  • 11 months ago when DD was born I remember when she was 2 weeks at Christmas time thinking, "this feels different". I was too busy nursing and taking care of my 4th Trimester kid. I told myself that next Christmas would be so much better and I'm starting to get excited! I plan on weaning from my day pumps. DD has already started the baby-led weaning for me over these past few months so I'm not producing a huge output anyway (maybe 6-8oz/day during work hours). That'll make it easier.

I'm doing a mix of 2-3 pumps/day now. At one year I will go 1-2 pumps/day. I will do this through Christmas because maybe that'll help me maintain my weight. After Christmas I will try to drop that last workday pump. I don't know what to do about the weekends. I think I'll just play it by ear and just go with the flow. I don't know if I want to wean the morning and night nursing within the next few months or wait until she's closer to 1.5 years.

  • I have no idea where to begin either. I pump twice at work and once when I get home. Any other time she nurses. She still takes 3/ 5 oz bottles at daycare in addition to solids though. I'm scared to drop any pump sessions because I barely get enough milk already and my freezer stash is almost gone.
