Pregnant after IF

Baby B is a week behind Baby A

edited November 2014 in Pregnant after IF
I had my 8 week ultrasound last Thursday and have been pretty upset ever since. My RE told me that Baby B is a week behind Baby A. He said that there's a 50/50 chance Baby B won't make it. I'm so upset and so scared. I also asked the nurse afterward and she said that when they see a baby that is 3 or 4 days behind it's not a big problem, but more than 7 days and it is. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm so sad it's hard to be positive. But everyone keeps telling me to stay positive. We lost our first pregnancy 2 years ago at 11 weeks, so I'm a nervous wreck.

Re: Baby B is a week behind Baby A

  • I'm sorry you're going through this. There is still a good chance that both babies will survive, and I will be sending you lots of sticky thoughts for that outcome. As PP said, vanishing twins are very common. I had a probable vanishing twin this pregnancy, although it was very early (two sacs became one sac; hormones got a bit wonky). It's a hard thing to process, and I would imagine it would be harder once you've see two little heartbeats.

Thinking of you as you wait. ((hugs))

Unfortunately it is common to lose a twin early (my dd was a twin, the other was lost very, very early). Most people have no idea. Since we have such early u/s, that's the only reason most of us ever find out.

Try and be positive; I know it's hard! There is nothing you can physically do to change the outcome, so I always feel that in a situation like that, the only thing you can control is how you approach it.

  • Yes, I sadly went through this, but it was very early on. It is called "vanishing twin" syndrome. I had 2 gestatational sacs, but only 1 baby developed a heartbeat. I am happy to say that I am 36 weeks pregnant with a singleton, so it does not always mean both babies will be lost.

Good Luck and hang in there

  • @gsancho‌ Yes, both had strong heartbeats. I'm not scheduled for another ultrasound until next Friday, the 14th. But, I may go in today since I've had a lot of breathing trouble from this cold. Doc told me to go to the ER last night but I was hesitant. Might go today. Very congested and out of breath easily. Can't take anything to release the congestion except Benadryl.
