April 2015 Moms

possible twins?

Need some advice from the other mamas that are having twins. I had my 16 week appointment today and my dr said my uterus is measuring closer to 20 weeks instead. Then when she went to hear baby with the Doppler she thought she could hear and echo of a second heart beat. One was at 145 and 140. She wasn't sure whether or not it was just baby moving around so much. She said she is thinking its twins but we won't know for sure until my ultrasound on the 28th.

Did your dr ever pick up two heartbeats on the Doppler with twins? Have you been measuring ahead?

I am just thrown by this as I had an ultrasound at 5w5d due to some bleeding and lower hcg levels and the tech said she could only see one sac.

Re: possible twins?

  • Doppler cannot be used to diagnose twins, so honestly I wouldn't put much stock in it. Is this your first baby?
    Due with #5 April 22, 2015. It's a girl!!!!!

Yes it was planned, yes we know what causes that, no we are not on public assistance, and yes we will be getting cable after this. ;)

  • I don't have experience with this; but I hope you get to find out soon. Did your doctor mention having an ultrasound sooner than the 28th? I only ask because I've read on here that some moms-to-be of twins have more appointments and check ups. GL!

  • I am in Alberta and our dr's do not have ultrasound machines in their offices. We go to ultrasound clinics to get tests done. They soonest appointment they had was the 28th. I tried two different locations. My dr felt my uterus to measure when she said it was much bigger than expected.

I did not do any screening tests for abnormalities that's why I've only had the one so far.

  • yes this is the same dr. Thanks for your advice. We do have 3d ultrasound clinics that you can start going to at the 16 week mark so maybe I will just pay to get one done. My dr didn't seem to persistent on getting an earlier ultrasound she just said book it between the normal 18-20 weeks and we will find out then.

I called the ultrasound clinic back and they have me on the waitlist in case of any cancellations.

  • I am measuring ahead with my twins and my midwife has been able to detect two heart beats with the doppler. However, the only way to be sure you are having twins is with an ultrasound. There must be somewhere where you can have an ultrasound ASAP.

  • I've been going to this dr since I was 12 so I would be a little sad to go else where and she was fantastic with my first pregnancy. It's just all very strange lol

I'm from Alberta and have had 2 babies. Get your doctor to put in the requisition for an ultrasound, the ultrasound place (efw, or wherever) will call you back. With DS2 I was with an OB and that's what they would do and I would get in if not that day then a few days later.
For what it's worth, fundal height can be big with no chance of twins. My uterus always measures 4-6 weeks ahead of what I am, my last OB always sent me for ultrasounds to check the fluid level and nothing was ever off, I just have a big uterus.
Good luck, hopefully you'll be able to get in faster going through your doctor.
  • Thank you @Babykell3. I think I may go to another dr to get the requisition. I was always measuring perfectly with my first but I guess every pregnancy is different. My 20 week apt is when I switch to my ob
  • Are you sure the doctor wasn't picking up your own heart beat?
  • what does qsb mean? I am not going to do anything til confirmed by ultrasound. We have no history of twins in either side of the family so I am a little hesitant to believe it. :) thanks!
  • I wouldn't take anything definitive from anything other than an ultrasound. I'm having twins, we didn't find out until 12 weeks. We had been to the OB and heard the heartbeat + I have an at-home doppler, that neither picked up two heartbeats. Now knowing that there's two, I can find both.. but being able to just pick up on two without knowing there are in fact two, I don't think would be a possibility. And I'm not measuring any earlier because of having twins, either!

Bingo, thus why I asked if you were a first timer. Very, VERY common to measure ahead with 2nd or more pregnancies.

Unfortunately, uterus measuring larger & Doppler doesn't confirm the twins. Now that there's a possibility, I hope you get your ultrasound soon, instead of waiting until the 28th.

Side note, had the toughest time booking my 20 week Obgyn & ultrasound. With 11/27 being thanksgiving, the office will close 11/27- 11/30. Then I'm out of town until 12/1 but my Mom has surgery scheduled 12/2. Ended up splitting my A/S & Obgyn appt

  • Unless it's really different from Manitoba to Alberta, they should be able to get you in sooner. I had to go for a dating u/s, and my OB ordered it as "urgent", so I got in within a week. If they just made a standard request, that would explain the long wait. I've been going to the same doctor who delivered me, and I know how hard it is to switch. However, after finally realizing I'm not receiving good standard of care, I've decided to make a switch. Relationship is worth a lot, but good care is worth more. I would also be considering switching if I were you.

  • I'm having twins, but I did IVF, so I've had an awful lot of u/s's already (6 including the NT scan).
We saw 2 sacs from the first scan at 6w6d, but I suppose its possible that you might not have noticed one due to a weird angle.

My OB has been able to pick up both heart beats pretty easily, but they are on opposite sides of my uterus right now, and from what I can tell, pretty easy to distinguish from one another.

As far as measuring ahead, I'm 15w1d as a FET, and I look more bloated than pregnant.  My OB hasn't said anything about my uterus measuring ahead, so I'm assuming its not.

Good luck with getting an earlier scan.

If you do have twins.... Only having 1 sac makes your pregnancy increasing high risk. I am having twins and have ultrasounds every 3 weeks. I would ask for another ultrasound.

Ps. I am from canada too.... And your dr seems a little off. She thinks you have twins, she should confirm if you do!

I wouldn't go out and buy two of everything yet. It's possible that your doctor was picking up the baby's heart beat twice. Heart rates fluctuate, my baby's ranged from 140-150 during my check up. Plus you aren't measuring all that big. I saw that someone posted yesterday that her uterus is already 4-5 inches above her belly button at 16.5 weeks with twins.

I am 15 weeks, 5 days with twins, third pregnancy (I had a loss this year) and my uterus is well above my belly button at this point. I get more frequent care from a perinatal specialist who works with high risk pregnancies. Mine have umbillical cords that are attached to the side of their placentas instead of the middle, which can cause problems and requires extra monitoring. This is one of the many conditions that are more common with multiples. If you think you are having twins, please go get a scan.

FWIW it was pretty hard to miss two buns in the oven with me. During that first scan they look at both your ovaries, your cervix, etc. I felt like they pretty much mapped out my entire reproductive system. I would not continue to see a doc who missed out on a twin entirely. What else could they miss?! Good luck and let us know how it turns out @livrobb‌!

I just can't imagine being almost halfway through a pregnancy and not knowing how many babies I had growing in there.  Sounds stressful!  good luck!

A friend of mine declined the NT scans on her last pregnancy. Went in for her A/S late, at 23 weeks, and the tech goes 'And there's your babies!' She almost shit her pants! The girl was like 'you're 23 weeks and had no idea you're having twins?!' My friend was beside herself! It's rare but it does happen.
I just can't ignore this even though I know this is a distracting statement, but "there's your babies"? Like, "there is your babies"?

  • Good luck...I really hope you can get in for an ultrasound sooner, even if it is at an elective place. To me it sounds like chances are there is one baby but it's worth looking into. I had an ultrasound at 5w due to bleeding and we only saw one sac and one yolk sac...a week later, we saw 2 sacs, 2 yolk sacs, and 2 tiny bubs with heartbeats. I think the u/s tech who did the first scan was just careless, though, and didn't spend any time looking for a 2nd sac. My beta at the time was sky-high. I know my fundal height was measuring 20w at 14w, but like you, I am not a FTM.
    IUIs #1-3 (1x unmedicated, 2x Clomid) = 2 BFNs, 1 m/c at 7w3d
    IUIs #4-6 (injects) = 3 BFNs
    IVF #1 = BFN
    FET #1 = BFN
    FET #2 = BFN

  • Thanks ladies. I don't think it is multiples either but it would be nice to know for sure! I am going to call the 3d clinic and see if they can get me in sooner. Will keep you posted on the results.
  • If you didn't have a dating u/s could your dates be off? Could you be further along?
  • So bizarre! The Dr. needs to give you an u/s - and if they don't have the proper machines the Dr. needs to figure that out. Or - you should look into switching practices.
  • Sounds like your doctor might not be a good fit, if she doesn't know what heart beats she is picking up, whether one baby, two babies or your heart beat.. that seems odd.. I would suggest an ultrasound like PP recommended!
  • I found out at 10weeks we were having twins and only because I was in the ER for dehydration from severe morning sickness and they did an ultrasound. I had an ultrasound done just 2 weeks before that but they only showed a single baby... The ER did an over the belly ultrasound and my dr office had been doing them vaginally.. I'd ask for an over the belly ultrasound
  • With my single baby I ALWAYS measured at least 2 weeks ahead and at least every other time they picked up "a second heart beat"(the echo of the actual heart beat off the placenta/umbilical cord).

With my twins I measured 2 weeks behind until 34 weeks, and I was asked FREQUENTLY if I was sure I was carrying twins because they would search and search for 10 - 15 minutes and not find the second heart rate. Once for a NST it took the tech over an hour before she called ultrasound up to check the baby.

Your doctor is more than likely trying to soften the blow if incase you are having twins but the ONLY way to diagnose twins is to actually SEE both babies. So try not to fret, it could be nothing, or it could be the most wonderful thing ever.

If there is no loss history or reason to suspect high risk some practices don't do any ultrasounds until the AS at 20 weeks. Which could explain them not knowing for sure. Although, if I was the doctor I would and I thought I heard two heart beats I would schedule an immediate ultrasound to find out... for my twin pregnancy they had me on extra folic acid and vitamin C.
