Little vent

I know this is so not a big deal, but I felt like venting to other moms.  I went to the grocery store with both kiddos and without realizing it, I got in the express checkout lane.  There was NO ONE behind me and only one person in front of me, not to mention that I didn't have that much stuff (though probably a few more than the "12" items)...the cashier actually says to me "excuse me ma'am, this is the express lane" and kicked me out!!  Even the guy in front of me kinda looked shocked.  I just think that is so rude of him, especially since there was no one else behind me and he saw I had two young children...grr!

Re: Little vent

  • Well, he could have been nicer...but I can see enforcing the express lane rules.  So many people deliberately try to break them and it's effing frustrating to get stuck behind someone unloading a week's worth of groceries when you have a carton of milk and deliberately tried to be efficient choosing the express lane.

And I get that everything is harder with kids...but kids don't give you a free pass.  You having two kids there should have had nothing to do, IMO, with his decision to enforce Express Lane Rule or not.

  • When I was a cashier i frequently kicked people out of the express line. Not for having 15 if the limit was 12, but not much more than that. There's usually (usually!) several more regular check outs than express. Every one can go to all of them; not everyone can go to the express. Even though there was no one behind you doesn't me there wouldn't be. It sucked turning people away, but it always (yes always) backfired on me the times I made an exception.

  • I'd be annoyed too.  I can see both sides, but I also think in the time it took for you to load your stuff back into your cart, you'd likely have been checked out.  To me it seems a bit nit-picky to have someone move if a) they really aren't much over the limit and b) the store is slow.  In other circumstances, I think it is appropriate to remind someone it's the express lane.

  • While he probably could have just checked you out in the time it took you to move all your stuff, I can see that they have to enforce the rule to a certain extent. No one wants to be behind the person who has 20 items in the 12 or fewer line.
