Formula Feeding

Switching from Similac Advanced to Similac Supplement

Our son was born on Wednesday (hooray!) and our hospital used the premixed Similac Advanced. When we got home, we only had Similac Supplement and have been using that since Friday morning.

He hasn't had a bowel movement all day today (Saturday) and is acting like he is constipated.
Is this normal or is it possibly because we switched types of the same formula?

TIA!

Re: Switching from Similac Advanced to Similac Supplement

  • Call your doc just in case but at the same time I wouldn't freak out. My DD was one of those kids who only had a BM every other day, every 3 days. Apparently that's pretty common, regardless of whether they're on breast milk or formula. As long as they're not dehydrated (pee pee diapers) they're fine.

  • Thanks ladies!
He finally had a BM (a couple actually) when we were changing his diaper this afternoon.
It seems like having his legs pushed up towards his chest is prime position for him lol.

I will make a call to the ped tomorrow to see if there is anything else we should be doing.

  • Are you BF as well??
  • Ah, the newborn poop issues. Neither of my kids started out knowing how to poop. With our first, it was so bad and so traumatic for us that even now, DH and I will randomly look at each other when we have no idea what to do about a new parenting situation and say, "Work the legs! Work the legs! Rub the tummy! Rub the tummy!" Then we crack up laughing. It may take a few weeks for your LO to get the hang of it. With that being said, try not to switch formula more than you must, because the change can cause gas, constipation, diarrhea, etc.
  • Thanks for the advice ladies! He REALLY likes to poop with a diaper off. I really think it is the position. @Kina1102 - I am not BF. We needed to use a surrogate, so that wasn't an option for me.
